Title: YZ250 - FZR1000 Clutch plates in a 7 plate RD clutch
Post by: SUPERTUNE on August 29, 2019, 07:11:43 AM
The YZ250 clutch fiber plates are wider than stock RD fiber plates. In RD stock clutch pack they come with rubber cushion rings that are placed in at the same time as the fiber and sit right inside of the fiber.
They were supposed to help the clutch have smooth engagement and dampen clutch rattle. Worked just ok when they were new stock powered bikes, now they're 40 +years old and the rubber are rock hard and with a good running engine and not new... the old clutch plates don't have a chance of not slipping.
By using the YZ250 or Yamaha FZR 1000 plates you throw the old rubbers in the trash and these plate take up the space where the rubbers were and now you have much more friction surface x 7 plates is so much better and you don't have to go as crazy with real stiff racing Barrnett springs.
Just a set of aftermarket 10%-20% springs do very well and won't kill your hand pulling in the clutch lever!

OEM Yamaha or aftermarket, such as Vesrah OK for the YZ250 plates?

They are all fine.  You can find a Kevlar based compound if you really want some additional grip but you don't need to.  This is quite common for Yamaha to use the same plates throughout the years and models.  The RD is low powered, high tolerance compared to the modern bikes still using these plates.  I would not worry about it.  It is much more likely you have old saggy clutch springs than worn out clutch fibers.

Those damping rings always go straight to the garbage and do not get replaced when I see them.

Sorry to bother you, I was reading this post and wondering if anyone can say what year of either the yz250 or 1000 bike clutch parts I would look at.

I was noticing you can buy the springs/plates/steel parts for about 55-60.00 but the RD it's double that. I've got a 73 RD250

FZR1000 from about 1988 to 1995. But the parts cross-reference to a ton of different models
Frictions: 4H7-16321-02-00
Steels:    31A-16325-00-00
