7 years after Superstorm Sandy submerged my R5 completely under salt water, the frame rusted through.
Here is the bike that fateful week in 2012. Note the 'high water' mark in the shed next to the bike:
(http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff131/aaaltered468/IMG_5067.jpg) (http://s239.photobucket.com/user/aaaltered468/media/IMG_5067.jpg.html)
Now that there is an obvious hole in my frame, I need to go ahead and build a new bike on a good frame using everything from the R5.
I've acquired a 75 RD350 frame. It's in nice shape, I may not even send it out for blast/powder, I may just respray with a gloss industrial enamel (tbd in the coming weeks).

The very first order of business is to get a Vermont registration. I've studied all the various info and posts here and elsewhere. It seems that all I need is a Bill of Sale (got it), an application, and a check for tax/registration. Apparently because it is "over 25 years old" and "less than 500cc" I don't even need a certified serial number verification, nor the bill of sale notorized. (We will see!).
I sent off the money and forms to VT this morning. Time will tell what the response is. Ultimately I want to convert the VT registration to a NJ title but that is a long way off. The VT registration, if granted will buy me a year.

Wish me luck.
This build will probably take until next summer to get through, since I am going away for three months this winter.
Ed
Hey Ed! Keep us informed on how that Vermont registration goes. I am looking at a '75 RD350 really soon that doesn't have a title and I live in NY. Plan on making a race bike out of it but it would be nice to make it street legal for test/tune purposes. and maybe the occasional bike show with some make/shift lights hahah
Bikes over 300cc will need a VIN certification by a cop, DMV, or a vehicle inspection station from what I understand. Keep us posted!

I read that Chin on the Tank article in the run up to my application. I am almost 100% certain that he has a typo in there. Note that the article is written by a member, not a cut/paste from the written VT rules. When I compared that statement to the VT official rules, I think 500cc is the cutoff. In any case I'll share results as they come one way or another....I can comply if I have to, I just don't think I need to.
When Verification is Required
6. Motorcycles which are not titleable but are 500 cc's or more and have not been previously registered/titled to the applicant or have not been previously registered in Vermont are required to procure a VIN verification from the personnel listed below.
It's not titleable because it's old, it is less than 500cc. We will find out.
Ed
its been done a bunch.
I was wondering how long that frame would last, i remember when it got flooded.

500cc limit for the inspection would be great for RD fans.

It's been weeping for about 2 years, I sort of knew this was coming. This past spring I found it a full rust-thru. It's in a low stress area so I left it for this winter. Meanwhile I had to straighten out my ignition problem so the bike hasn't gotten to many miles this year.

Frame is all stripped and degreased. 3000psi washdown found areas that were not properly prepped for its last paint job. Overall the frame is unmolested and in great overall shape....

How much $?
I used the NADA values for a "good" 1975 RD350 to calculate tax. Tax and Reg cost me $120.
In the future I will be trying to flip the VT reg into a NJ Reg and Title, which will cost me again but it's all good once mission accomplished....
They must be busy. The last one I did was about a week from the time I sent the money until the plate and registration arrived in the mail. The local DMV issued me a title on the spot after they dragged a big book out from under the counter and verified that VT is a non title state for motorcycles ( 15 years or older if memory serves). 500 CC is the cut off for hassle free registration as mentioned above. My 75 RD350 cost $86 to do several years back.
So you get plate too so registered and title not just title, even better.

No, that's the 'catch'. You *dont* get a title. You get a legit registration and plate from a "non-title" state, with no residency requirement, all by US Mail.
If you live a reasonable and cooperative (I'm in NJ so I still expect trouble ahead), you convert the VT registration at your home state DMV to a new registration and title for your state.
Alternately you could ride forever with the VT registration. Selling the bike down the road would still be an issue.
I don't intend to do the home state flip until the bike is built, sometime next spring but in any case, having a registration and plate gives me the green light to proceed with my project.
Yeah the DMV lady here in VA said she didn't understand how a VT registration could have a VA address and I told her that VT is a non title state and that is what VT DMV gave me when I submitted my bill of sale. She got the big book out then and it told her that she had to issue me a VA title. I could tell she wasn't happy about it. But she did it. She remembered me a couple years later when I came in with the VT registration for my RZ and processed it without question...

Probably won't work out this way might be even better here, you can get title put in your name for not much ($40 or 70 or so don't remember) but to get registration and tag have to pay regular yearly fee $40 and a $300 new vehicle on road fee if you don't have valid tag and registration to move it to. But I assume would have to be a FL tag to avoid the $300, but also assume would quickly accept that to let you put title in your name, knowing sooner or later you or whoever you sell to will have to pay the $300 to get registration and tag.
Did you have bill of sale notarized?

Did you have bill of sale notarized?
I did not.
Rule doesn't state I needed to:
"Used Vehicles which have not been titled, and are not required to be titled:
• Bill of sale must contain sufficient information to identify the vehicle including Make, Year, VIN, Purchase Price, Mileage, Signature of Seller and Date of Sale"
Reading further, why doesn't this vehicle need to be titled....
"Vermont titles only vehicles that are 15 years old or newer based on calendar year. From 1/1/2019 – 12/31/2019 Vermont will title all vehicles with model year 2005 or newer. All Titles (except ATV) = $35.00, ATV Titles = $22.00. Lien fee = $11.00.".
for me that's a FULL STOP although there are more rules below that statementRegarding VIN certification, I also didn't do that. See my comments in bold:
VIN Verification (use Vermont DMV form VT-010) is required for:
1. All used vehicles with out of state titles being registered/titled in the applicant's name for the first time are required to procure a VIN verification from the personnel listed below, unless purchased directly from a licensed dealer.
it doesn't have a title2. Vehicles with Salvage Documentation from any state, including Vermont, are required to procure a VIN verification from the Vermont personnel listed below.
it has no documentation at all3. Vehicles being titled under bond are required to procure a VIN verification from the Vermont personnel listed below.
not me 4. Vehicles with registrations from any foreign country, including Canada are required to procure a VIN verification from the Vermont personnel listed below.
not me5. Vehicles over 25 years old, for which a Vermont resident is seeking an "exempt title" are required to procure a VIN verification from the Vermont personnel listed below.
i am NOT a VT resident nor am I seeking a title since it's over 15 years old6. Motorcycles which are not titleable but are 500 cc's or more and have not been previously registered/titled to the applicant or have not been previously registered in Vermont are required to procure a VIN verification from the personnel listed below.
its NOT titleable beacuse of age, AND it's only 350ccI suspect I will have the plate and reg any day now that the check is cashed.
Here are the complete rules. Granted, they do take some interpretation....

Thanks, a lot of mis or out of date info out there like here. www.chinonthetank.com/2014/04/get-a-title-with-a-vermont-registration/
Believe me i read the Chin on the Tank article about 10 times. That article doesnt follow the actual written VT rules in some areas. Thats why I sometimes inserted "BY MY INTERPRETATION" in my explanation.
I'll update when I see the plate and regi in my mailbox.

450 rebel?
A friend aquired it and never got it started, it's been parked for a long time. One long day in the garage, and it's running so it won't be here long lol.
So it begins, the Rebel has vacated the garage. Took the R5 for a final blast around town Sunday, and of course it's running better than ever.
Began the tear down today and took some notes.
Considering:
- getting some stuff rechromed, once it's off I'll take it to the local chroming shop for an estimate (fenders, JSpooner Fender extenders, aluminum headlight ears, headlight rim...)
- want to get the seat re-stuffed, I like the seat look but have always hated the "pool noodle" filling in the Vietnam seat...
- thinking about a repaint in 1970 Purple/White, I've always liked that scheme. But should I start with other tins? The yellow paint isn't "bad" but no where near perfect. If I only had a set of usable tins....
Save or repaint....

Here's what I would like:

Purple and white gets my vote.
It's so easy to spend somebody else's money
First estimate from a top notch vintage painter was $1450.
Original is always better in my eyes. :twocents: you just don't see that scheme very often where I live.
my 70 has original paint same scheme, its by no means perfect but im not going to repaint either, its definitely unusual to see them these days in that scheme.
Purple is my favorite color. But for that price you might be able to buy another R5 with that scheme. And you can always decide on paint later. :twocents:
not a decent one, they arent that cheap anymore. 1400 is steep though. my local guy could do that for half that. :twocents:
My 400 was done for $750 with embedded decals. Granted mine is one color, but your quote seems steep.
You can find a nice original paint R5 for not much more than that. I see more of the orange/ white or black ones though
Your speed blocks look nice. I'd say put that $$ somewhere else.
Got pretty far tearing down today. Next step is to pull out the lump, the frame is completely stripped other than the forks. Looking at all the connectors in the harness, it will be good to clean and lube those old bullets....

Looking good! This is random... but I have a R5 grey tach cable if you want to switch. Don't know if you care about those little details or not.
Looking good!
Stock paint always wins in my book.
Aftermarket speedblock paint on my LC is so gone. Will be going with standard '80-81 JDM two stripe blue RZ350 livery.
I do like the gold DS7 paint almost as much as the purple, tho.
Well Hot Dog. Dropped off the fenders, my Spooner brake stay, and my Spooner fender extensions at the chrome shop today. $400 total including fixing some dents in the rear fender. Can't wait. Now that I know the price is "reasonable" I'll be dropping off lots of little bits when I gather them up, like the front brake hardware, chain pullers, tail light bracket, and some bolts.....

I got my first batch of parts back from the chrome shop and they look fabulous. He took the dents out of the fenders (yay!), I don't think I've EVER seen a rear fender without dents. I will be sending a whole lot of stuff to him in in the spring, after I get back from a 3 month vacation. Need to do further disassembly and cleaning of stuff to figure out what I can chrome. For sure the 3 month vacation. Who does that. WTF. 🤔
Regarding the vacation....
My wife is an avid golfer so I rented a place in Florida for the winter so she can keep playing.
I would rather be home making progress on my bike, it's hard to get all the coming tasks out of my head. Meanwhile I have no desire for golf, so I'm working part time down here for beer-and-chrome money...and doing some fishing.

What a great project! The chrome looks great!
Have had a few very productive days in the garage.
- Made two orders, some from Economy and some from Yambits. Sorted through all the parts needed and made the orders Sunday. Remarkably both are scheduled to be here Wednesday.
- Cleaned the wiring harness and other misc wiring In The ultrasonic cleaner.

- Did a final disassembly, cleaning and inventory of all items going to chrome. 52 parts in all.

The goods from Yambits.... of note, the only source I know of for R5 Chain Pullers and they are really nice, heavy metal and chrome. Was cheaper than rechroming my twisted up originals.

Hats off to Yambits for their R5 chain pullers. I immediately noticed how heavy they were, and after examining them they are super nice. Much nicer than the originals. Check them out:

Broke my 12 day quarantine to take my parts to the chroming shop. Took the opportunity to go to the grocery store and loaded up on food.
53 parts to chrome, $335. 2 parts to powder coat, $50. Yay I am under my $500 budget.
Time to start up the polishing wheel. That will be the project this week. Need to forge ahead before it gets nice out, because then comes yard work.

Ready to build up rear hub. Discovered that the Yambits sprocket bolts DO NOT FIT, they appear to have a different thread pitch. That sucks because I missed the opportunity to chrome the originals, expecting to use new stainless. Oh well, it's a greasy stink wheel anyway...

Started test-fitting hardware to the new frame. The mounting dimensions for the R5 parts and tins *seem* correct. I did find that the holes on the R5 oil tank filler are more narrow than the RD frame, which I verified on the old frame. Not a big deal.
I need my chrome back to really get rocking and rolling, but this "slow" week was good to work on some of the time consuming, final details.
Chased out the frame ground point:

Can anyone tell me if they are seeing watermarks in the pics? I am, that GD Photobucket.
I don't see any watermark.
I don't see a watermark. But if I disable the "Photobucket Hotlink Fix" extension in my Chrome browser, the watermark is displayed. My extension version is v1.4
I see them.
I don't see them on my phone, but I do see them on my computer
I see the watermarks
I see them on my iPad
I see them too...Photobucket ruined build thread history when they pulled their free system and began charging $$$s.
The build is looking 'on point'...powder coat is like dipped chocolate, nice. And I love the 350 side panel....could be off a 60s US motorcar.
Re; the sprocket bolts.....I love a session on my bench mounted wirewheel....old cruddy parts come up lovely...give it a go with the original bolts. Some would argue that stainless isn't strong enough for sheer forces....
I hate photobucket. I actually paid for this crap.
Anyway, I got my DG head spacers today, fit is fine. NOT the full 8mm thick that DG originally specified but will work fine.

Fashioned dampers for the Tool Box. Original was shot, and I can't find an OEM nor knockoff of that part. These will work fine.
Sacrificed an old thick, soft handgrip. Fitted then trimmed....

First off, sorry about the Photobucket crap. I've changed hosts and am in the process of offloading all my stuff from there, what a headache.
Bars refreshed with painted perches, levers polished and new hardware:

Got the wiring harness in. Since it's cleaned up and not hacked, it's a pretty sano install, although the meeting point behind the battery has never been a great design. Oil tanks on and plumbed. It's starting to look like something. I need my chrome back, it's overdue but the guy said "this week"...

looks good. :cheerleader:
I agree, i never liked that design aspect about these bikes, but at least its all accessible. they did a much better job on the 400s

Did more work on controls, then wiring today. Got the tach cable run and the clutch cable. Then focused on the wiring inside the bucket... appears all sorted after about two hours staring at diagrams and ohming a few runs out....I want to apply power sooner than later to see that 'stuff' is correct and working.

when you cleaned your harness, what did you use in your ultrasonic? I am working on mine now and not sure if I should use WD or order some simple green.

I used Dollar Store Totally Awesome, about 25% with water. After cleaning I sprayed connectors with WD. Later I hung it in my utility room to dry for a week or two. I didn't completely submerge it,
(because it didn't fit) I did each section of connectors at a time. The heat loosened up the covers on the connectors, allowing me to easily pull them back for close examination and final cleanup with a tiny brass brush. It came out very good.
