Turning Wrenches / Re: VM28 Float Needle

Thanks guys.  It did run after reassembly, but I did not have time to shake it down.  It's warming up here finally, I will get a ride in this week and see how it is.

I'll need to tear them back down to measure the float height...

So here is the side view.

The needle sits well and closes well, I can tell by blowing gently into the gas line port.

If I tap the carb body, the needle does fall down a few mm.  Is this normal?

Carbs are now apart, in the ultrasonic, then getting a blowout.  BRB...

Turning Wrenches / VM28 Float Needle

I am having fueling issues.  Bike will not start.  Petcock flow tested fine.  A tad of fuel into the plug holes and it fires right up, but doesn't keep running.
I have suspected float issues for some time, I replaced the float valve with Viton last season.
Question I have, is this the corr3ct installation and orientation for this type of valve?  My old ones didn't have any little clip on them.  Can I run without these clips?

Aren't they all "supposed to run"?

General Chatter / Polishing Stainless
April 02, 2024, 08:47:27 AM
I bought a set of used polished Mistrals for my 4 stroke.

They aren't exactly the mirror finish I expected, but I am not sure if that's the way they come from the factory or they need some re-doing.

Anyone have advice for polishing stainless?  I've only ever done aluminum.  I know it's hard to see in pictures....

Events / Mid Ohio VMD July 26-28 2024

I've sat it out for several years as it seemed to be on a decline.  Somehow it's exploded to be THE summer event.

I've got a green light for it, already reserved a van rental.

Anyone else considering?  I've always had a blast there.

Micro Muscle: Under 100cc's / Re: I love this bike!

Nice pickup Scott.  I parked my R5 next to one at a show in Florida and was amazed at how tiny everything seemed on the 100.

I became enamored with the MV America, seeing one for the first time at the Guggenheim Art of the Motorcycle show in NY back in the early 90's.
Then I got to hear one sing years later at Mid Ohio...

Oh damn I love a special.
At Mid Ohio I've personally seen a YDS 4 cylinder, a Kawi 7 cylinder, a Kawi 5 cylinder, and an Enfield Bullet V twin.

Badges:  I got a repop screw on set years ago, and was also gifted a NOS set.  I don't recall what's on there right now.  You'll see repops from time to time on EBay.  IMO hold out for screw on ones rather than stickers.

Swinger: is a vintage DG RD400.  That's 2" over stock for a 350.  Can only run stock size tires.  Had "fender extenders" machined by a good guy on this site.  Bike is NOT prone to wheelies unless you try.

General Chatter / Re: What to dfo with your Old Oil

I save some for the chainsaw bar and my town has a free oil collection barrel...

Tip: I keep some junk oil in a gear oil bottle.  Very convenient for filling the chain saw reservoir.

You're in the right place!  Excellent bones to start with.  I bought mine as a basement queen, where it had sat for 30 years, according to its license plate.

Here's mine, as bought and current state.
