I finally found the 400 trans I have in my parts stash. The 4th pinion gear definitely has more drag than the other gear. This trans has not been in a running engine in well over 20 years, but it is fairly clean and the other gears spin easily.
Good to hear. I am going to clean it all up and get new bearings on it. Should be good to go then. Thanks for looking into it for me.

Unfortunately it was already powered coated when I first purchased it. I just figured for wear and tear it was best. How much could it cost to be chemically stripped. I will have it painted or I will paint it. I'm not scared. Was going to paint my sons bmx frame this winter so it would be good practice. I also have good connection at a body shop. Probably knock off some weight.

Very cool. I have always wanted to title my dads 1974 Honda trail 70. It did not come with a title in the states because it was considered an off road vehicle. But it did come with all lights, horn.  except turn signals or mirrors which is easy enough. I have his original bill of sale and receipt for 450.00. Maybe I will just send them that. Lol

General Chatter / Powder coating?

My frame is already powder coated black but I want to de-tang it and fix a few things.  Can I have those areas powder coated or does the whole frame need to be stripped down and fully recoated?  Thanks all.

Clean everything up really well. There may have been some crap or old dirty oil in there.
Perfect preparation prevents poor performance :vroom:

Took apart and inspected. Shafts and gears look fine. Thrust washers are in good condition. I see that the gear in question has oil grooves cut into it and has a tighter clearance fitting on the shaft. The RD bible doesn't talk about that gear specifically but I am saying it's normal until told differently.

Will take apart and check all components.  Tried uploading a vid of it but it's the wrong format and My YouTube account was high Jacked by my son. Any tips for uploading videos on here with a Apple phone.

Turning Wrenches / 78rd400 trans?
October 28, 2022, 11:40:18 PM
Going through a new used transmission I received for my 78rd400 and only issue besides needing new bearings is that the Mainshaft 4th gear pinion (24t) spins but has drag. Is that normal. It's not like a bad bearing type of drag it just needs force to spin unlike the Mainshaft 6th gear pinion (27t) which I can spin with a push of a finger. The gear in question is #2 in the picture and using # 7 for a reference. Thanks in advance.

Turning Wrenches / JL exhaust installation
October 24, 2022, 03:51:29 PM
I was looking into the stainless JL exhaust. It says won't work with 78rd400 due to the loop style frame for the rear foot pegs. I am not running rear foot pegs. Is there a chance it will then work.

Socal250. I was able to source a bolt yesterday when buying other parts on eBay. Thanks for your help.

Thanks Vintagetz.

I have a bad 5th gear in my 78 Rd400 and was wounding if a 79 Daytona special trans gear set will fit into my case. If so will I also need a Daytona clutch basket?  Thanks.

That would be great. Thanks. Yes no rush. Just going through the bike and looking for missing or damaged parts at the moment and making the long list of parts needed. Bike hasn't run sense 2012. :(

If possible can someone take a picture of the bolt if they are doing any maintenance and put it next to a tape measure so I can get an exact length on it. I see bolts that may work  thanks
