Years ago when I was young and invincible I use to be quite the hooligan on my GS1000 but never in town. The sheriff saw me one evening probably at a ton+ down a long straight. He caught up with me three days later getting gas and let me know he knew it was me (the bike has a distinctive howl to it thru the Kerker pipe). He gave me a stern lecture and told me to behave or he would scoop me up with a shovel one day.

Turning Wrenches / Re: Brake bleeding problem rd400

I have a 300 KTM that is damn near impossible to bleed the front caliper. The best method I found for it his to reverse bleed it. Get one of those big syringes they use on cattle and connect a hose to the bleeder on caliper. Fill it up, crack the bleeder and push fluid back until it comes out the fitting on the master. Works on that monster.

General Chatter / Cool story from several years ago
October 01, 2020, 04:00:37 PM
I  was about this day twenty years ago. I was driving a peterbilt service truck home from a service call in Moorefield WV. I was heading west on RT33 between Petersburg and Seneca Rocks just coming to the end of a long straight when two V twin sportbikes came around me. Never saw them coming...musta been doing 100+. The pair dove into the 40MPH corner knees down and were GONE.

10 miles down the road is an old country store and I stopped to get something to drink there set the bikes. One was a TL1000R Suzuki and the other a 996 Ducati. As I was checking out the Ducati two guys with gray hair walked out in full leathers eating ice cream. I commented on their bikes and their high speed pass that nearly put me in shock.

Cool old dudes, one was 68 and the other was 70. They ride through there every year burning up the road. The said RV's are too expensive and slow.

The Ducati Scrambler cafe caught my eye.

Just an idea...What % of ethanol is in your gas? If it is way up there it may explain the big jetting.

old guitar strings always worked great for me

I did the CF wrap. It is not easy to get all the weaves to lay right. I used contact cement to lay it on before soaking down with resin. Its a real bitch to keep the air bubbles out. Loaded the paint gun with straight acetone and misted it on. Broke the surface tension enough for the air to come out.

that's a cool little bike! Is that a black bomber in the background?

The master cylinder is an EBAY Chinese set. Radial 16mm and it works great. Much better feel than what it had. Also had a matching clutch lever that worked fine. Looked like decent quality. I researched info on radial masters and found that 16mm looked about right. Would love to have a brembo but this suited the test stage just fine.
The bars are modified Tommaselli clip ons 32mm bored to 33mm
Fork brace is made out of two aluminum shaft collars with the brace made of 5mm carbon fiber. I think I had $35 in it.

Been testing and tuning. Finally got off it long enough to take a couple of pics. Made some carbon fiber parts. The tank is steel wrapped with CF. Swingarm is a modified part from a KTM 250. Modded specII chambers, SCR top end, chinoy ignition. The headlight is off an old buell.

Always wanted one of these since I was a kid. What a blast to ride!

General Chatter / Re: Recluse clutch or similar
July 17, 2019, 06:56:02 PM
that's an interesting idea. I have a recluse in my KTM 300 and a yxz1000 Yamaha...really cool. I love the one on the KTM but when I switch bikes and forget the clutch I look really stupid (stall/fall over)
I remember seeing somewhere that the RD clutch disc can be swapped with some other Yamaha sportbike but I don't recall which. May be a starting point.

that's a 40/1 mix. Probably a little lean on oil if you are flogging it. If not probably fine...depends on what you have it jetted for more importantly.

I think you are on the right track. I am wondering if the lines to the carbs are pulling air around the fittings on the pump during deceleration (high vac). That is would explain why everything looks good at idle or just setting still. You could test with a vac pump.
I have Tygon lines on mine with spring clamps.

Turning Wrenches / Re: RZ350: Squealing Tach
June 13, 2019, 03:26:35 PM
I have two trail techs on my enduro bikes. They have been reliable but a little sketchy on rpm on both bikes at times. Hard to read in direct daylight...especially when concentrating on not hitting a tree. I have a KOSO TNT on my just completed RD. Works great and the tach is solid with no bounce or error.
