1975 CB550F in near mint condition!

Is it not possible to add a kicker with the TZ dry clutch setup?

General Chatter / Re: New 'ride'

I've got over 2000 miles on my pedal-powered bikes so far this year, compared to 50 on bikes with engines!

My son took his RD to the local car/bike show, he was the only non-cruiser there, but caught more interest than all the rest!

if you are getting 100 psi its not a piston issue.. unless he put in rd250 windowed pistons. then.. you'd def have an issue.  pull the carb put piston at tdc and look in there for skirt windows on the intake face. IF they are there, then yeah, he really fucked up.

Mark,
I will check for the windows today, I suspect they are there.  Thanks!

I'm looking for possible causes why a basket case DS7 isn't getting fuel into the combustion chambers.

The carbs are cleaned and seem to check out fine, the floats are adjusted, bowls are full, pilot jet checked for obstructions, and I raised the needle all the way up just to help get fuel moving.

Compression isn't great at just over 100psi, but should be enough to push air around.

The plugs are bone dry after kicking it over.

When placing my hand(s) over the exhaust (no pipes on yet) and back of the carb it actually feels like more air is being exhausted rear-ward through the carbs than forward out of the exhaust.  I also get a little fuel spatter on the hand behind the carb, and none out of the exhaust.

This bike is a mess, the PO was a severe hack and gave up halfway through destroying this thing.

He said he put in some new(er?) pistons (no boring was done it sounds like), so I am thinking he possibly installed some incorrect  pistons that are blocking the transfer ports?  That's the only reason I can think of for this, but please advise if you've got a different idea!

I bought an R5 350 with no spark (per the PO), except when it arrived it was A DS7 with spark, and this rebuilt carb installed.  Also, the wiring was giving him a hard time so he installed a redundant system!

The elusive zero main jet!

I'm curious about it.  I'd like the LC engine for my TZ chassis.

General Chatter / Re: RD400 engine value

So you've essentially got cylinders, heads, cases, crank core, and side covers.  Value I'd say is driven by the condition of the bores mostly, how deep any damage is.

Jim, your experience gives me a little more confidence wit this on the road then!  I don't enjoy highway riding much anymore (between dodging deer and texting drivers), but do ride the 300 off road a good bit, and the RD's for short Lake cruises on backroads.

I want one of these so bad! I need to seriously research the best way to register in Wisconsin. I think I can purchase in MI and transfer registration  :umm:

I'm in MI, just across the border from WI.  MI is very lax (I had a street-legal YZ490!), but WI is very uptight.  I think you need to buy a bike that was plated in MI and you have a decent chance in WI, but do your homework.

I enjoy working on RD's, but it's a luxury to have a push-button bike to ride as well.  I couldn't pass this 300 up, only 15.x hours on the clock.

can i hate you now? dammit. took me 20 yrs to track one (and a shitty one at that) down now they are all over the place.  :bang:

congrats :toot:

Thanks, it's actually nicer than it looks, turns over well, carbs not seized up, just seems to have electrical issues (as in plugging in a battery has zero effect on function!).  The GT380 in the background is the opposite, worse than it looks!
