Old school Microns with head pipes

I think for a 76-78 RD400. Listing is a little vague on that detail.

$400 in Canada.

Not mine etc.

General Chatter / Trac Dynamics RD 350/400 swingarms

Trac Dynamics swingarm.
https://tracdynamics.com/products/yamaha-rd-350-400-swingarms?variant=43143530283177.

Anyone try one of these (photo)? They look slick. RD350 arms are same length as stock RD400 +1" over stock RD350.
The products shown elsewhere and in earlier threads are box tube construction and not billet as this photo appears to be. Their website shows products for the 350 and 400 as well as extended length arms for other bikes.

Not all the reports about Trac Dynamics were complimentary.

General Chatter / The Great Japanese Motorcycle War

How Japan went from hundreds of motorcycle manufacturers to just 4.
Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha.

Interesting info. Some good vintage film clips.

Due to some tight tire clearance concerns I have removed my RD 350's cut-down stock front fender and fitted a billet fork brace.

What are some options to the Airtech glass fenders? Is there something better or easier to fit and finish? Airtech prices are OK, and I have their rear inner fender but it is pretty raw. Probably should be filled for paint since the gel coat isn't very smooth. Reminds me of old JC Whitney VW Baja Bug parts.

This aluminum option seems about the same as far as installation goes. I'm more comfortable drilling aluminum than fiberglass, and it wouldn't need rubber washers to keep from cracking at the mount bolts.
https://vintagespareparts.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=114

What has anyone successfully used? Does anything from other makes/models fit? Any other quality glass options? I don't usually ride in the rain but I've been caught before and I'd rather not have water slinging up under my chin.

Yamaha Blaster "Banchee" (sic)... That's what it says.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/144982219824?hash=item21c19d1c30.

Not sure about the pipes on this one.  :umm: I think the acoustic effect doesn't work without a megaphone in the front of the chamber. The builder must not know 2-strokes.

Not a big ATV fan. I see a 350 engine. Therefore it isn't worth what he is asking. I'm posting purely for academic reasons.

I'd be afraid it would overheat.  :boom:

Not mine, no interest.

Get rid of the knobby tires and high fender and it wouldn't be bad. Tracker style...

Not a bad deal for a 400 at all. Not my bike etc.

RDs are still winning!

This guy Colton Roberts is affiliated with a company called Southpaw Porting and Cycle Performance. Anybody ever heard of them? Appears to be in Illinois.

Another weird engine design.

If 4T is blasphemy then surely this is heresy.

I had to watch a couple times to get how it works.

General Chatter / Harbor Freight ultrasonic cleaners
February 15, 2023, 01:40:25 PM
I just discovered that the inexpensive Harbor Freight ultrasonic cleaner cannot withstand constant use with methanol.

I was afraid it wouldn't handle it but for $80 it was worth a shot. I was using it to clean flux from circuit boards. It looked promising for a while but after last weekend it began to show signs of distress. Acrylics and polycarbonate often can't handle contact with alcohols. Isopropyl alcohol for sure. Methanol either apparently.

I thought the bottom grid was something more robust. It went first. lasted about a week before it curled up. Now the lid is crazing and cracking in week 3. Must be polycarbonate. Guess I'll be ordering an all-metal version.

Might make a good motorcycle engine. It's a mashup of rotary and turbine sort of. They claim it meets the standards of a 4-stroke design but that seems to be a political designation IMO, since it doesn't reciprocate.

They claim up to 80% thermal efficiency.

The video narration seems like a poor translation.

General Chatter / Yamaha CS3 1972 rabbit hole
October 05, 2022, 03:02:15 PM
Looking at an engine with heads that look similar to an RD 200 on a case stamped CS3.

On the often-wrong internet I find 2 different 71-72 CS3 200 motorcycles from Yamaha and a CS5E that was a direct predecessor for the reed-valve RD 200 in 1973.

71-72 180cc piston port CS3 with a older style Yamaha tank design and cylinder head, and another CS3 that looks more like a R5 or DS7 down to the slab-sided DS7, R5, RD-style heads with piston port shown as both 71 and 72.

At some point the engine was enlarged to 195cc. Were the 195cc all CS5E? I have seen the more archaic looking CS3 listed as a CS3E with the updated styling shown as "CS3".

I have seen both versions online tagged as 71-72. Was Yamaha selling 2 versions of the CS3 those years? Or has someone transplanted the topend of a CS5E onto a CS3 case?

I'm very confused.

Pretty neat for an engine swap. The article makes it sound more grandiose.

Brand new engine for Jawa 638, 639, 640. Interesting because it's so shiny and new.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/125483980373.

$1648.80 plus $198.00 shipping from Prague, Czech Republic. I expect you could negotiate a better price.
IDK if these are useful at all. Single carburetor. No idea if they run well. Jawa sold an awful lot of these bikes in the East. CZ apparently too. It is the model that kick starts with the gear change lever flipped over.

Power spec is a rather anemic 23hp. The bike looks like it was made in 1970.

I'm tempted myself since it is close by me. This looks like a nice restoration.

Asking $2700. Seems fair.

I thought seller might be someone on the forum.
