Turning Wrenches / Yamaha RD R5 case questions
July 31, 2024, 02:33:19 PM
Hello all,

I could not pass up an r5 bottom end at Mid Ohio.  Couple questions: Is it correct that R5's were only produced in 350cc?  I need to get some cylinders and heads and just wanted to know what my options were.  Also I have a couple of spare transmissions, can you put a 6 speed transmission into a 5 speed r5 case? Just curious of the differences between the 5 speed and 6 speed bottom ends.

As usual I appreciate all of the knowledge on this forum.

Thanks

Turning Wrenches / RD petcock
June 10, 2024, 09:53:02 AM
Hello all,

Does anyone know any aftermarket replacement options for a stock rd petcock.  I have a stock tank with a stock petcock.  I rebuilt both the gas cap and petcock however the left side carb fuel line does not fill all the way to the nipple on the petcock.  My experience with the stock petcock is that it does not seem to flow very well or it seems to flow uneven.  I set both float heights to I believe 15 mm.  Don't quote me on the height but they are set to the stock setting. I don't care it it appears stock or not.  If anyone has ideas as to why this is occurring please let me know.  When racing the bike it starts starving for fuel under heavy loads/higher fuel demand.  As always thanks for the help and knowledge on this forum.

Just fired my RD 350 after rebuild.  New seals, bored, new pistons, and rebuilt carbs.  The bike started first kick almost.  Runs and idles.  However it will not pull load without choke on.  I was told i could have switched the float bowls.  Is this something?
Thanks

Turning Wrenches / Yamaha Competition Yellow Paint 0026
January 11, 2023, 10:36:14 AM
Good Morning,

I was searching the forum as I am looking for the PPG paint code for Yamaha Competition Yellow.  No one at the paint shop can locate the Yamaha paint code.

Per a search of this forum:

This is what I have found
PPG color code for the '85 RZ yellow
Yellow: dbc83033k
RAL reference 1028.
this one may be the best option.

Has  anyone tried this PPG paint code or know one that is close the the Yamaha yellow?

The guy at the paint store said that dbc83033k is an "International" color yellow.

Thanks

Turning Wrenches / 1975 Yamaha RD350 Pistons size
April 26, 2022, 01:45:59 PM
Good Afternoon,

Thanks for all help, this forum is a great resource.

I wanted to see if anyone could identify if this is a stock bore piston out of a 1975 Yamaha RD350.  On top of the piston has a 6 with a forward pointing arrow then 14.   And just below the highest part of the dome of the piston it is stamped with 979.  I added a pic in the attachments.  Thanks for the help.

Turning Wrenches / 1975 Yamaha RD350 fork swap
December 02, 2021, 10:53:15 AM
Good Morning all!

New to the forum.  Have been looking at old posts but can seem to find exactly what I'm looking for to help with my new addition.

I recently bought a 75 RD350 without a front end.  I am looking to build a dirt track racer and was wondering what fork swap would be the easiest/best to do on an RD.  I want to run a 19" spoked front wheel and have been searching the forum.

I don't need a front brake.

From what i have learned from the forum and others.

R6 pre inverted is a common swap.

97-00 GSXR600 will also work.

I was on all balls racing fork conversion website:
https://www.allballsracing.com/forkconversion/

And determined that both the RD and GSXR have:
TOP bearing : ID 25   OD 48  WIDTH 13
BOTTEM bearing: ID 30  OD 48   WIDTH 12

I also know that the GSXR has a 25mm front axle which would allow me to use the front wheel i was looking at using.

Was wonder what fork swaps have been done and what work is required to complete the swap.

Thanks again,
