I've never heard of this one, it screams '80's cruiser...almost. Looks like a neat little bike, not mine...

Edit...nevermind, the look of the motor had me thinking it was a 2 stroke, still kinda neat

General Chatter / Selling on BAT w/ no reserve?
March 21, 2022, 04:42:53 PM
I'm still aiming to sell the RD, I want to avoid the CL yahoos and I try to avoid FB whenever possible. I figured I'd try BaT first since they seem to get silly prices. They accepted the bike but won't let me put a reserve on it. Would you risk it, or should I head over to iconic or ebay?

I think this guy needs to put the crack pipe down, or maybe I'm out of touch, I was hoping for $4K for my 'daytona'

Howdy all, I'm still planning on selling this bike, and the weather was nice the other day so I figured I'd do a cold start video. The video starts a little slow, but I left it in for dramatic effect...  :burnout:  And sorry about the brown t-shirt looking like plumbers butt...

The bike was originally built ~1983/84 by a kid working at a local Yamaha dealer. Someone never picked up a '76 or 77 RD400 they'd brought in for repair, he bought it for repair costs ($50) and ordered all the Daytona parts at employee discount then assembled a RD400C/F. He put over 12000 miles on it before life got in the way and he parked it. 20 years later the kid is a mechanical engineer and he hired me as a drafter, I bought it from him ~20 years ago and I still work for him, off and on.

It's time for it's next 20 year owner...

Greetings. So I came to the realization the bikes in the garage just aren't bringing the joy they used to, plus I'm cresting the hill and wanted to try some different paths...

So I bought a Rotus 7!

I won a recent auction on BAT for the car (or at least a very similar car) of my childhood dreams. The Rotus was built from ~1982-1992 by a Toyota dealer/racer in Maryland. Patterned on the Lotus 7, it's a few inches longer and wider to accommodate chunky americans, it uses many off the shelf Toyota parts and could be had with the small engine of your choice up to a Buick 3.5L aluminum V8, they built ~70 cars total. This one has the 2.3L Ford (Pinto) motor with dual sidedraft webers and a lumpy cam.

Now I just have to get it home and that's where the quandary begins...

The seller is including a bunch of spare parts, rotors, springs, calipers, complete rear (live) axle assembly, etc.. "enough to fill the back of a pickup" was their initial guestimate. Most auto transport companies won't ship parts, some say I can lock things in the trunk, but this car doesn't have a trunk.

So I'm weighing my options on how to get the car and the spares, ~2400 miles round trip Savannah Georgia to Austin Tx... (mostly just thinking out loud)

1. Find a shipper who can get the car and the spares, assuming the seller will box/crate them sufficiently (maybe $2000)

2. Ship the car only (~$1000-$2000) and drive the pickup to get the spares, ~$800 in gas alone

3. Rent an enclosed trailer locally and go get it all, I'm overdue for a road trip. (<-- this might be my best option)

4. Uhaul car trailer would be great but they don't seem to offer one-way rentals on them.

I'm pretty stoked, and my birthday is next week  :toot:

If you made it this far, I'll be listing the RD and 2004 V-Strom for sale soon...

The 4-Stroke Blasphemy Forum / 80's bmw K75?
August 28, 2021, 11:17:06 AM
Howdy, I've always liked the styling and concept of the BMW K75, I've seen a few pop up in the $2500-3500 range recently, kinda thinking about getting one. But I'm a little concerned that parts for a 35year old bmw may quickly add up to more than the purchase price, and I'm not sure I like them *that* much. But for context I left my 2004 v-strom gas tank almost empty for over 4 years (life and knee surgery...), lots of rust... a replacement OE fuel pump is over $800 and a new gas tank is over $1000...but I really like that bike.

Any of y'all have any experience with these old bricks?

Price seems about right for the area... high, maybe not, I dunno.

But it looks like a nice bike and I'd be happy to pick it up and store it for you if you're coming to the motogp race, this year or next. Just trying to help... :whoop:

Turning Wrenches / LED headlight flicker
May 30, 2021, 02:43:42 PM
I installed the Auxito LED H4 9003 bulb recently and it flickers at idle, once revs approach 2000 it stops flickering. Test meter on the battery indicates the charging system is working properly. I read something about a diode or something that will suppress the flicker. The bulb creates an impressive amount of light, I just wish it didn't flicker. Any ideas?

Turning Wrenches / Shift Shaft oil leak - RD400
May 05, 2021, 06:05:57 PM
I'm assuming the drip comes from the shift shaft seal. I remember a post from Chuck, I believe, several years ago about installing a bronze bushing in the outer cover to help support the shaft. Does anybody know where the post may be or have any details on the task?

Thanks

I'm just beginning the process of updating the handlebar switches with repops off ebay and replacing the headlight bucket and ears with freshly painted ones. Every time I remove the headlight my anxiety peaks, and of course the left switch has slightly different wiring/connectors. I've identified most of the wires, though a few still have me scratching my head.

I'm trying to label all the connections inside, but I still have to drag the mess thru the hole in the back of the bucket... just wondering if you guys have any tips or pointers on the "best" way to do this without creating a bigger cluster fudge?
