I have sean many 4 strokes guys use hard back K&N's- work great. Not so much on  a reed valve 2 stroke- why?
Push back [resonance] Reeds are designed to push back the wave form of the crack case [to some extent].
Think of it as (+) and (-) waves. Piston goes down = + pressure to the carb. out see and feel spit back out of carb.
Piston goes up (-) wave- pressure sucks fuel from carb into crankcase.
Up& down it goes until it hits a (RPM) frequency that all is good harmonized or equal. Flows to it's optimum in & out.

Spit back: happens even with reed valves at RPM's so there must be a wave that does that, Right.
If that wave hits a hard surface and reflect back into the intake and disrupts the flow, we call that a stumble.

Simply changing from hard back to soft- foam will remove that stumble - jetting maybe required. Due to flow increase.

Please comment on this subject if your results very.

   I still have a lot of RD stuff. Have had guys come and offer $20K less than it's worth. For the whole shop.
I have RD stuff and need to empty my shop. Ds7/R5/RD stuff a little RZ stuff.
If you want all or a large part of my inventory please visit.
   I will cater to those that visit, great BBQ, shooting at my range, ride some 2 stokes.

  I am not a well man- back and other issues have made me stop doing what I loved. Making RDs go again.

   I teach those that have the back for it, from engine rebuilds to tune ups.

I love Yamaha RDs and all street 2 stokes. Kawis/susuki/honda...etc.

  Have many files of information on models and manuals.
I prefer tuning a motor I know/ rebuilt to optimum performance. But will tweak any 2 stroke after inspection.
    I like money- I am for hire but not hard core manual labor. Love teaching owner so they don't need me.

       Need 3 motors- none rebuild call me, you want them rebuilt  work with me I will teach you.

Need to move a lot of stuff....

Why was lead used in regal fuels in the 20-70's?

1970: Congress passes the Clean Air Act. The EPA is formed and given the authority to regulate compounds that endanger human health.

1973: EPA mandates a phased-in reduction of lead content in all grades of gasoline.

1974: EPA requires availability of at least one grade of unleaded gasoline, in order to be compatible with 1975 make and model year vehicles. Lead damages the catalytic converters used in these new vehicles to control tailpipe emissions. Catalytic converters are still used in vehicles today.

1996: EPA bans the use of leaded fuel for on-road vehicles (leaded gasoline was down to 0.6 percent of 1996 gasoline sales). Lead is still used in some aviation fuels.

Thanks to coordinated efforts, lead is now absent from gasoline in most of the world. Following the lead phase-out in the United States, the oil refining industry chose to construct additional refining capacity to produce octane from other petroleum products, rather than from renewable sources such as ethanol.



When were all R series Yamaha made? 1970-1979  The only RD that was made to run on NONE leaded fuel was the RD400F.
Stock timing was 2.2mmBTDC, pipe restrictions , butterfly carburetors
What a DOG stock...
    Lead was the fuel of the day in the early to mid 1970's why was lead used [Anti knock] Octain booster.
Also COOLED pistons, coated them with their deposits, not a clean fuel- bad for the environment.

So do we need lead in our old bikes? Not really but it does have a place. 100ll airplane fuel has many good and bad thing in it. it can be used to keep modern fuels stable. BAD  anti-freezing additives, anti-foaming additives.

  Good over bad?
If you store fuel say 92 oct unleaded on the shelf- how long is it good for?
If you have 100ll on the shelf how long is that good for?
You go look it up....
100ll keeps longer, no ethanol to break down, also wont eat Buna- rubber parts.
Ethanol is derived from mostly CORN sugar= alcohol, the process is a quick one no real distilling [properly] for fuel. So we see after 1 year of a bike sitting with fuel in it. Sludge in carb, petcock and tank. Cleaning is needed.
Some stabilizers will keep the breakdown at bay.

Performance Lead vs no lead
Lead as stated is an anti-knock agent octane so we run ethanol high octane 98 - no issue except cost.
the manuals reference to fuel unleaded or low lead was available at pump 96oct leaded

No we do not need lead- have your head modified for $$$
  Or blend your fuel- I do and have for 4 years, cheap insurance I can run 2.0mmbtdc on a stock RD350 at WFO all day no worries.
  I run a 11:1 RZ500 on 100ll  no issues.

I am no expert but have tried and found it works well, for bikes that sit for 3-6 months no issues starting up.

I find myself Rambling on about 2 strokes, to the poor forks that are on the other end of the phone.
Tried this, done that etc... We all have stories.
Business life as well- what I was!!!

Well I suggest a phone list for lonely 2 stroker's that want to talk about their experiences.
Brupt over the high end etc..

I am getting older and don't ride that much and wrench less now a days. But love sharing information and experiences.
I was never a  podium placer 5th-7th was where I was in RD racing [60+ riders]- money was the obstetrical.

Enjoyed tuning and seeing people do better than before my tune, that gave me much satisfaction.
I got to know some relay great people in 2 stroke tuning and of course have stories. As I am sure you all do [over the age of 40].
   Why do we like 2 strokes? power to weight= fun times, lifting the front wheel at will and sometime not at will....

My back is my weak link and stamina, can't do what I used to..  Motivation is also a thing, no interest due to No one is interested!!!

That's why I shut my shop up [RDsOnly], lot's of people want me to make it go, but don't have time to see how it is done.

  I must admit I self medicate with beer... That's right I get drunk to ease the pain- I am sure none of you do the same. I like beer cause you have to pee-3- 5 pisses and go to bed- your done. 
Sure I used to use Doctor prescribed meds hated how they made me feel.
   We all die some time, why not enjoy the ride to the end- a wheelie at the end?

Enough philosophy live life well and enjoy as best you can. I have done the best with the circumstances I was handed.
I have been a recluse for the past 4 years  not do to some plandemic just separated myself for evaluation.
I really do enjoy teaching people what I have found that works concerning 2 strokes.

To Pump 2t or Not to pump [Premix]

What is you R series pump?
#1 Did you know the 1st Yamaha 2stroke race bikes[YD1]USA race Catolina had a pump on them?
   They took them off- and pre mixed, later proven on the 80cc Japanese bike.

A pump is a mechanical precision made instrument- tuning fork please Yamaha logo. yes they are kind of complicated but m=not realy when you understand what they do.
Yamaha was 1st, Kawasaki, Bridgestone, the others.
  Why did Manufacturers install a complicated device to meter oil for a 2 stroke?
Due to years of testing, they found a need for a graduated mechanical pump to optimize use and operation of 2 strokes. in the 1960 you can find vehicles in the 150cc range going 60,000 mile before rebuild. Dependable??? YES

So you question your 1970's oil pump- not dependable  What happened?
  If you recall in 1980- late fuel change no longer you could get 98 oct-100 oct supreme. Now 95 oct was supreme, mid grade= 90 oct, low was around 87oct.
  1970's 2 and 4 stroke were designed to run on that years fuel.

So you fill your R5 with supreme 1980  that is now  90oct/86me you over oil and must adjust your pump. I worked at motorcycle shops at that time.

Most guys did nothing might have re jetted and eat their top end [less lead in fuel].
Good for us we did a lot of top ends, shyster said it's your pump- get rid of it..

Not true but thousand shucked their pumps and premixed 22:1 castor based oil, lost of fouled plug. 
2 strokes are finicky I want a 4 stroke- 2t bikes were cheap late 80's

So your non mechanical OLD man told you premix F*** the pump.. You as all good kids believe what is herd.
Young 1972 you are 14 yrd you have seen a lot of Hondas some Hodakas, not many Kawasaki's and Yamaha's But when you saw a Kawy go zipping by OMFG.
I want one, then a Yamaha R5 zipps by the boggy of the start kawy....

OK well I like mechanical stuff... a Bilge pump is real similar to an oil pump in a car.
  So I am a young teen peddling around watching fast bike ziping around me as well as the Honda 80/90/120 scooters.

Back to Oil pumps... OMFG
To pump or not to pump today in 2000 era Yes pump we are lazy for GOD sake. FUel sucks even worse now.
OK- pump design
idle- 100:1- max 18:1
WFO [Wide Fucken Open] 18:1 some 20:1 kawi
SO you premix 32:1 where is that mix optimum-1/2 throttle top gear 4krpm-5krpm....
Do not do long pulls in 5th or 6th gear WFO
   I have seen all kinds of seiziers on piston is this and air leak of timing- Pliiiiissss
4 corner is lack of oil..
Under piston will show to advanced timing or to lean- long pulls.
Timing is piston crown dents, to ring land melted... Plug will show SPECKLES piston on plug ground.EGT= 13000+ if you have one. Timing and air leak- air leak is though out throttle  of line to WFO.

Why did I do RD's Only- I retired,  had Shit loads of money and followed my dreams
  Made money for 5 years,RDs Only  Then was a charity builder, just to see it go.
Moved to TX made enough to keep business open for 3 years. Changed to teaching owners.

OK I don't know shit about 2 strokes, after 30+ years of tuning... Do not belvie me do your own research like I did 30 years ago. Talk with Kenny Roberts, CalCruthers, Erv Kanamot, Scott Clough, John Ritter, MotoCarrera.

Denco engineering was local, I had a KH250 I wanted it to sound awesome, they knew of me a a shop rat for Honda and Yamaha, I got a part time gig. Porting and building pipes for Denco. I could ony get there 3 days a week,I had Vocational studies we were putting the 1st turbo on a Yamaha xs1100. I was the Hydro dyno guy. Did piston top rinds to reduce compression, remove 2nd ring on piston.



2 strokes
I loved 2 strokes a 100cc motor could make you scared.....
I got to drg race a few 250/350 from denco, had a good time. was quick

I got a Yamaha RD350 when my brother crashed my KH250, we traded.
  I learned about porting and chambers [the sound wave] liked the power. Used to race up Highway 9 everyday. One week end raced up my road for fun found a lame duck on a Hond 900f with number plates. Kicked his ass until the last corner, it was Reg Pridgmore. He found me at the gap and told me [like in my face] you should get off the street and race. OK  well he found me at Emery Honda and knew the parts manager and told him "Get him on the track"

OK #1 leak downs are Key to a well tuned 2 stroke.
  If it can hold 3# for 10 minutes- find the leak, 3 minutes at 6# still look for leaks.
Most leaks are intake manifold, some base gaskets- bad surfaces, bad heads same thing surfaces.

2stroke no leak
timing- more advance = quicker. More retard= pipe hit, find the setting that makes power.
jetting
start FAT, reduce jetting x2 [saves time] better go 1 steep smaller
Worse- 3 steps up - better increase until not good.
Adjust timing- mix ratio, jetting to obtain max tune.

I Blew up many a fast motors, learned and made corrections, end of season 2 stroke competition= max tune - frag a motor you got 10 month to fix. Who made it to the end was key.

I have half wits- so far [1/2 wits I make it run ok THATS all I want]
No Idea most GP 2 strokes were wasted at end of race- just like 1/4 mile bikes.
  That is what I used to do, 1/8 of a second a lap wins.
Not many old men now that can afford these bikes want to do that. Whats ok I tune to make you happy. Your TZ is just fine [not] 20 + hp if tuned right. OK I would be scared if I rode a well tuned tz250. But I would see what it can do... Just me, old fat racer.
I have tuned jet skies, tz's, RDs, R5's , Rz's, RS's, gammas for racing. I try to get them on the edge in performance. But back off due to it is a lawn mower to the owner.

We all under stand this. If you start a well tuned bike, when you put your helmet on- You get your head straight. Ride HARD them test as riding around bike.  I loved owners that tried to blow up my motors 80 mile break in, WFO came back an stated not right. Love you I will make it right. timing and jetting and off they go, they don't seem to hang throttle that long after. Come back with a smile.
I do not ride customers bikes unless i get feed back of something weird. I ride WFO all the time, look for droops in power= transitions. Must wheelie 1-2 pop up 3rd good tune stock.

WHO would like to learn how to make these bikes fast?
  Whats it worth? I am closing my shop but want to help Potential tuners.

I need $100 an hour to teach, $250 an hour to evaluated = tear down top end
parts are on you.

I can put you up here at training center for $75 a night, you by food and refreshment.

You will have to sigh a liability waver if you want to shoot, insurance is on you and your bike. I like to spend at least 2 days with customers, ride and tune... COTAS is just down the road, track day tunes are $350, and I cook.

Real question can I make you a better tuner- I think so 2 days you will know the basics one more day might get the inside scoop.

Times have changed I was #3 contributor back in the day Hwy9rd350b. Loved this site, have gone on to different stuff. Has been over 2 years since being on this site.
Sorry for all you that lost touch with me, life got kind of upside down.
Was looking for the rant I did on "The good the bad the ugly" on filters- can't find it, just glad to see SOCAL and Mark have keep things on the up and up.
Back in the day we had a very lively site "cant remember the name" US 2 strokers or something like that. Very abrasive but fun when you were right [SOCAL] was always right/ He lead me to 2stroke world, a better informative site I grew in.
Well I am an OLD 60 now 2 stroke tuner, had RDsOnly as a business for 10 years. Did over 1000 motors 140 restorations.....ETC.. I loved my hobby business but did not make a living at it.

So to date I have a horde of parts new and old have to make $$$ and reduce the foot print.
RD400 parts most all went 1st, have some Daytona parts lots of 350 parts R5 & RD
I know this group- EBAY $1000 us guys $40 so I like offering parts to those that know- they will be used. Have 9 motors R5-DS250-RD250 & 350, worn out cylinders good for big bore or re-sleeve , cranks- R5-RD No 400 cranks, boxes of parts. Come by a box of parts...

Will post again on other RD related stuff.

Compression/timing vs heat- long pull @ max rpm
  Octane= fuel more compression higher oct.- Lead we need [ave gas 100ll]
      Mixed with Non-ethanol fuel 91 oct with 100ll= 97-98 oct [average fuel in 1975]


#1 RD Battery= 11vdc - timing
        TIMING is everything [almost] to a good running 2 stroke.
---1- battery vdc -OK

  Timing @ 1.8-2.1mm btdc
  Depending on compression [PSI-vs ratio google] 13/1to 11/1
  Most RD's will be in the 12/1-high 11/1 ratio depending on mods

#2 Compression
   Head squish or moded = ratio [PSI] most in 125psi- OK at leaded fuel
   Over 126psi -130  Fuel- higher octane needed [prevent deto]= detonation

1 Timing /compression= compromise of 135psi- 103oct fuel ll, max 2.0Btdc
   NOTE: More advance snapper throttle response, quick= fun

- Timing is always 1st- advanced jet for rick deter deto, short runs spunky.
    Long runs WFO [high rpm]retard iggy

-1.7-2.1  mm btdc depends on set up
    More advance = fun [no deto= octane]

SO we have a parameter - timing VS compression /octane

  We get that with out jeting -feels better

Now  jet
Low end = idle - off line exit a/s air screw 1/2 out - 1.75
  pilot= to small / air screw in .5 to 0 runs better
  pilot to big /air screw 1.5+ idles higher- runs better

Sorted 25.7-30 pilot RD250350/400 {most}

Now main jet - Fuck the middle we will deal with that later!!!!!
1/4 throttle chop to WFO stumble --- does it clean out rev past 5k-12k?
  Trouble shoot- add choke when not running out= if better go bigger on main.
                                                                          if worse smaller main jet
OK you got that close feel good revs out

Now work on low end- pilot jet up hill down hill.
                                 up hill does it hesitate up hill? ba..ba barap go- to lean
        adjust air screw before new pilot 1/2 turn out= bigger pilot needed TEST
                                   down hill 0 throttle bang --bang--bang to fat pilot
                               adjust air screw or go down on pilot and adjust a/s
You have your Main close,
pilot OK, mid range is needle and nozzle jet

   1/4-1/2 throttle - WFO [chop]
       Falls on its face? Hit choke-
      if better need more main go down on needle clip bring needle up 2 pos.

      If goes then stalls and goes call me- or any other tuner on this forum.

OK all is well now you have a spunky off the line bike that runs out to 10k now
Do  a long WFO run kill switch- clutch in. Replace plugs with new.Go to shop.Do plug chop???? remove the other threaded part from the ceramic OR use a loop X10 ceramic down low in the plug you should see dark to light brown rings.Good tuned main jet 2 stroke.
   ... Go ride have fun- tunes as you ride- most ride you will not turn back to the shop, tune and ride again when you get back makes you want to ride more.

I am under self seclusion. have been for 9 months.
  This  stuff of stay at home is really interesting- I have had 15+ people show up to do work on my house and in the shop. This month
  I use gloves, have no masks keep my distance etc. always have. But I do like shaking hands...

What I have learned is this is not a one and done thing it will be like  the common cold. Being healthy is a good thing. I gave up on that when I had to learn to walk again and never got back to what I was.
  So as we go forward, be kind to yourself, its ok to be a little paranoid [watch the movie A Million Ways To Die In The West] funny but true.

This is no NEW thing- just Funny how we are going about this one.

  Do you really think "Toilet paper" will save you?  Makes you think. is there going to be shit convention I did not know about?
  Well if the media said "food shortage" all hell would break loose. So paper got you to shop, Not bad. Now you actually buy what you need Food. So you are happy sting at home.

Me I have dealt with back issues and sever allergies for years. Most customers know I look like I smoked a bag of columbine gold. if I was not on my allergy regiment.

  I just hope all you 2 smokers have no problems and have fun turning wrenches and riding!!!!!
