General Chatter / video I made a while back
January 29, 2023, 07:35:53 PM
I posted this video I made a few years ago, riding my cafe RD350 with music.  You tube dinged me for copyright violation on the music so I finally got around and loaded it on Bitchute.  enjoy!  see https://www.bitchute.com/video/Ln6XfEO04jWW/

I have an RD I want to switch out the engine on and I live in California.  I have heard nightmare stories that if you do it and don't have a bill of sale for the engine they assume you stole it.  I lost the bill of sale for it years ago and now I want to use it in  bike.  Anyone with experience with this?

I have an R5 with some problems and have a spare RD350 engine.  Are there any complications in switching engine/trans out for an RD 350?  Has anybody ever done that?

General Chatter / dual disk wheel for RD?
July 24, 2021, 07:57:34 PM
I inherited a bunch of RD parts in a purchase I made years ago and trying to find out what this wheel is for or from.  Appears to as an RD400 but has bolt holes on each side of wheel for disk so I assume its for dual disk use.  Anyone have any ideas?

Are the clutch assemblies the same or interchangeable for these bikes?  I have a box of 4 of them and want to sell them.

Are there any spark plugs that resist fouling on an RD350s?

General Chatter / value of used pair of carbs for RD400
February 02, 2021, 05:38:42 PM
How much should I expect to pay for a rebuildable set of carbs, OEM Mikuni, for a Yamaha RD400?  I see prices all over the place on Ebay.

Check the alterations on the intake port on these cylinders on Ebay.  Also, cut out above intake of cooling fins.  Any Ideas why this was done and if it improves performance?  see https://www.ebay.com/itm/333830105894?ViewItem=&item=333830105894

General Chatter / Wrist pain riding cafe Rd
November 02, 2020, 07:29:34 PM
I have an RD350 that is cafe with clip ons.  It takes about 5 to 10 minutes of riding and my wrists get tired/sore.  Any one have that problem and is there anything other than changing clip ons you can do about it?  Wrist supports, etc?

Turning Wrenches / cleaning crank area
October 27, 2020, 03:13:01 AM
Is there any way of flushing the crank area out when you are replacing a cylinder and piston other than removing engine and splitting open?

8 or so years ago I bought motorcycle parts from a guy, first name was Ken and he lived in the North Highlands area of Sacramento.  He used to race RD350s and when I knew him he restored various 2 stroke street motorcycles and sold them.  Does that name ring a bell with anyone?  I would like to get in touch with him.  He moved and his cell phone number that I had is disconnected now.

are expansion chambers for RD350 and RD400 interchangeable??  If not, are the hanger connections different?
#15
I have a stock RD 350 that was running sluggish on acceleration, checked timing and points, ok.  Adjusted the air screws on carbs from their standard 1 3/4 out to out only 1/2 turn.  Performance dramatically improved.  What does that mean?  What happens when you turn in air screws, less air or more?  What is the purpose of this adjustment and what is it compensating for?
#16
I have a generic question about expansion chambers.  Will chambers originally fitted for a RD350 fit an RD400 and vica versa?
#17
I have an RD 350 which is fouling one spark plug sometimes at start up, same cylinder all the time.  If the bike warms up with out fouling, it runs fine.  Bike has good compression and seals.  Any ideas?  checked timing and cleaned points.

Turning Wrenches / R5 -RD350 conversion
June 29, 2019, 04:37:33 AM
Years ago I bought a bunch of parts and engines from a very experienced RD person who raced and rebuilt bikes  and it included the following item.  It was an R5 engine rebuilt with RD350 cylinders (ie reed valves).  What piston would be used in that unit to have the correct compression ratio?  It has .75 over pistons when I take the head off.  Could an RD350 piston be used in such a set up?   or does the height of the top of the piston to the wrist pin differ between the R5 piston and the RD 350?

I know the rumor is that they are crap, but has anyone had any actual experience with these very low cost kits?  see https://www.ebay.com/itm/RD-350-yamaha-cylinders-pistons-kit-1973-1974-1975-new-RD350-cylinder-kit-US/232987337340

can any one explain the difference?
