Cages, Floaters and Flyers / Thanks Dad: '56 Porsche 356A
December 28, 2023, 03:56:25 PM
Sadly, my Dad passed away the Friday before Christmas.  He had been in decline since a stroke a couple years ago, and long-term congestive heart failure.

Thankfully, he passed in his sleep with his arm around his wife, in bed in the house he built on the piece of land he loved.

He made his career at GTE/General Dynamics as a prototype development engineer, and had the skills and aptitude to design, fabricate and repair anything that was asked of him.

He left me a lot to clean up, including his shop FULL of vintage and modern hifi stuff, ham radio gear, oscilloscopes and electronic test equipment, antique gas engines and farm equipment, a few lathes, a Bridgeport mill, and about 10 each of anything else you could imagine.  He was a hoarder to be sure, but mostly of the useful good stuff a relentless DIY'er needs to get the job done..

The cream of the crop is the 1956 Porsche 356A he bought in the early '60's to drive back and forth between San Luis Obispo and Sacramento while in college.  He permanently parked it in his garage around 1970, just after I was born, where it has stayed ever since.  Just 77,000 miles on the clock and not a speck of rust.  Mostly stock condition, with a paint respray early in life, and a period "extractor" exhaust.

I've been waiting for this car my entire life, now I just need a safe place to park it.  More pics coming in a few months when I drag it out of the garage and give it it's first bath in 50yrs.

Turning Wrenches / Transmission linkage tuning
April 09, 2023, 12:51:08 AM
I got out for a ride today, and was reminded of a nagging issue in the trans linkage and mechanism behind the right side cover.

Upshifts are flawless, and downshifting 6-5, 5-4 are effortless, but 4-3, 3-2, and especially 2-1 require a little more left leg action than usual.

It feels like the pedal goes down without engaging or something?  I suspect its the adjustment at the star wheel, stopper lever or shift shaft assembly behind the right sidecover.

Anyone got any tips for me?  I wanna get this thing dailed in 100% asap.

General Chatter / Bring a Trailer LC advice?
March 31, 2023, 12:05:20 PM
Hey Friends,
I'm in the process of setting up a BaT auction for my LC.

As I've mentioned before, there are a ton of great quality take-off parts that should go with the bike.  Perfect condition stock 4U0 pipes, center stand, carbs, brake system, rear mudguard with reflector, etc, etc.

Obviously, these parts are worth their weight in gold to a buyer wanting to return the bike to stock condition.

Unfortunately, BaT shipping only covers the bike, and if I include the parts with the auction, "BAT SHIPPING IS NOT AVALABLE FOR THIS AUCTION".

This seems like it may limit bidder involvement to those able or willing to deal with shipping or local pickup themselves.

How would you deal with this?  Seems to me hassle-free shipping and the spare parts hold similar value.

Turning Wrenches / Success!
February 19, 2023, 03:33:34 PM
Back in June, I posted asking for recco's on a inline fuel valve for my TDR.

I was tired (still am) of cleaning the carbs every spring after the winter layup due to bad modern gas, etc.

I got and installed a Motion Pro brass inlive fuel valve and ran the carbs dry before putting the bike up for the winter, and just dragged it out and started it up today for the first time since June.

No hassles with clogged jets and it's running great with no Italian tuneup needed!

Here's a short vid, coz everyone loves pictures with sound:
