General Chatter / Duplicolor Paint Shop Paints
May 02, 2023, 06:01:46 PM
Anyone here have any experience with Duplicolor's Paint Shop line of paints?  I'm gearing up to paint the CBR400 and I have a HVLP setup I'd like to use.  Proper 2 stage automotive paint costs are pretty high.  I have yet to see anything I could afford at the moment, even for a set of fairings.  Paint Shop is premixed lacquer paint.  I read on some forum post that it isn't great when it comes to fuel resistance.  It's pretty cost effective though.  I'm thinking of using it for primer and base coat and getting some decent 2k clear.

I'm new to spray painting like this and all the options can be overwhelming.  If anyone has any advice I'd love it.  Also if anyone knows of a decent 2 part line of paints that isn't crazy expensive.  I've been recommended Lesonal and Wanda Paints for that purpose, but they're both expensive enough that I can't justify the expense right now.

So this is the continuation of this thread here:

https://www.2strokeworld.net/forum/index.php?topic=4472.0

The original thread wasn't meant to be a build thread.  I like to name my builds something fun.  I knew this bike was cursed, but today I began to truly understand the cosmic horror that awaits me in the shop.  It's fun to find random tools still connected to the bike.  Like the suddenly vanished while working on it.

General Chatter / MotoGP Video Game
February 02, 2023, 09:35:06 PM
Anyone here play the MotoGP series in the last 5-6 years?  A while ago I played an older one and while the game was a blast, the physics were backwards.  It played like a car racing game in that braking in turns caused you to turn tighter.  Trying to play it like you were riding an actual motorcycle didn't work.  Did they ever fix that?  Id love to get back into the series, but I won't be if it stills plays that way.

This thing looks like it's been pulled up from Davey Jones Locker.  Also, of course it's Gastonia.

Definitely a basket case, has YZ80 engine.  If I had the extra cash I'd consider picking it up as it's local to me, but sadly not in the cards.

I got recommended a video on Youtube called TWO STROKE BIKE WEEK! and you know I was going to watch it.  It's 55 minutes of coverage from Deals Gap!  That's pretty great because I've yet to make it out there despite living in Asheville since 2015.  Young kids, ya know?  Anyways, all of us that weren't there can live vicariously through CycleDrag's incredibly excited host!

They just keep following me home!  I found a totally sketchy looking frankenbike on Facebook marketplace at least a month ago.  It had 3 pictures in the listing, but could tell it was an FZR400 aluminum Deltabox frame.  After a long, pretty strange correspondence with the seller I was able to go pick it up last week.  It's a 1990 FZR400 with an FZR600 3HH engine and '92 GSX-R front end on it.  It's absolutely clapped as you can see.  I really wanted it for the frame.  They're pretty uncommon these days.  I was planning (and maybe still am) putting a 2 stroke engine in the frame down the road.  Was thinking Rotax 257.  That engine is right side drive, so I'd need something like an Aprilia RS125 swingarm or modify the current one.  I'm getting ahead of myself lol.  Since apparently the engine is still good, I plan to get it fully roadworthy after my CBR400rr is finished and worry about crazy swaps later.  It's more of a complete bike than I thought, but is still missing front brakes, controls, and probably a bunch of other stuff.  I haven't dug into it yet.  I was pretty jazzed to see that ubiquitous gold gas cylinder from the rear shock when I got out of the truck though!  It'll be a bit until I get to it, but wanted to post this properly knackered FZR here.  Oh, and it was definitely raced at some point.  It has safety wire all over it.

Not mine, but seller says it runs and rides.  Seems like a good deal if so.

General Chatter / Mmmmm, marinated calipers

When your replacement brake calipers come pre-marinated in brake fluid from eBay.

This may be a stupid question, but I've yet to find a satisfactory answer.  What are the actual benefits of an aluminum frame and/or swingarm?  People like to use aluminum swingarms on their RD builds, but why?  Is it a looks thing?  I get that steel will flex more than aluminum.  The Big 4 in Japan switched over to aluminum frames by at least the late 90's.  The only thing I really found looking online were people saying it was cheaper for manufacturers to produce aluminum ones.

I finally did it.  I got my hands on one of the legendary Japanese 4 cylinder inline 4 sport bikes from the late 80's.  It's a 1988 CBR400RR.  When I bought it, I couldn't find another model for sale online in the U.S. (eBay, Facebook, RareSportBikesForSale.com).  What's wild to me is that I paid $3,000 for it and it had been listed for 2 months.  To me, I got a hell of a deal.  It runs well, maybe a little rich, but it's so much fun to ride!  Handling is superb and turns into corners like nothing!  It came with race fairings that I'll be refinishing using the stock reproduction decals.  I don't know what it is, but I love old fiberglass race bodywork!  For those who aren't familiar with the little Fireblade, they were only sold it Japan.  Apparently there were hefty taxes in place for bikes over 400cc, so the Big 4 put a lot of love and then cutting edge tech into their 400cc inline 4's.  A good number of these made it into the UK as grey market imports.  It has a wicked sound due to the gear-driven cams and it redlines at 14,500.  It just wants to be opened up.

This particular bike apparently was brought to the U.S. by a military servicemember who had bought it in Germany while stationed there.  It has a title, so it is (thankfully) street legal.  It needs the fork seals replaced, so that's up first.  I just bought a house with a nice garage space, so working on it will be considerably more enjoyable than my last place.  These pics are from the ad as I haven't had the chance to get any pictures of it yet.  More to come!

Not mine, I've never seen an RD60.  If I didn't have way too many projects, I'd go look at it since it's local to me.  Marshall, NC

I've wanted a Datsun Z since I was in high school.  Even then, they prices were going up.  Now that I'm doing some welding, I wanted the opportunity to hone my skills on something of consequence.  I was able to get this one for $200 and a fully disassembled '96 CR125.  It's in super rough shape, but that's what I want.  It's an early 260z, meaning it shares the body with the 240 rather than the later year ones that are more like the 280z.  It almost got sent to the crusher.  It's been sitting a long time, not sure how long though.  Engine is seized, rusted out everywhere.

I'll post updates periodically in here rather than a full build thread.  I want to share the journey with you guys because this is the best forum on the internet!
