Turning Wrenches / Re: Fork Seals Help
February 16, 2025, 09:08:16 PM
Good to hear you got it sorted out. These "simple" jobs can be the worst ones.

I use a 2 foot offcut of PEX plumbing pipe in the same diameter as the seal to drive in new fork seals easily. Fits snugly and provides even pressure to push it home when hammered in lightly. Usually found in the offcuts box at the local Ace Hardware for $1. As you found, sockets work fine too.

Replacing the missing plastics will cost more than the purchase price, and No Title is a big red flag too. Pass on that.

I had to remove oem fork seals put in at the factory in Japan in 1974 from a Kwak 400 recently, and they were just as tough as these to get out. I used the Dremel cutting wheel in the end, a seal puller didn't touch them at all. I feel your pain.

Tell us which make and model you are talking about, and one of us can help.

Good grief ! I had one years ago that ran okay but could never find a seat or other parts for it, so sold it for $200 cash.

I've got this Black Widow one with the single rail. It works fine and is easy to load up. Only has tie down points in the middle across the rail, and can rattle a bit when driving if you don't put something in the receiver to dampen it down. I got it used and cheap so I don't mind that. I wouldn't put a Goldwing on it but most old RDs and the like will be just fine on it. I carried the scooter in the picture on a 9 hour drive with no issues.

Turning Wrenches / Re: Suzuki T20 muffler pipe seals

At the joint....

The down pipe od is 38mm.

The muffler od is 42mm.

Depth of the seal is about 30mm and should be stepped like the GT series seals.

If you can point me at a suitable seal, I'd be grateful.

Sorry to be slow getting back to you Mark, we have the builders in this week and they are using the garage to cut wood and stuff so can't get to the bike. I know the circumference is 2.71 inches. I was experimenting with red plumbers rubber gaskets last week to see if I could build that up in layers.

I found out the gaskets for the GT series don't fit after I bought a pair.....too small.

Turning Wrenches / Suzuki T20 muffler pipe seals

I've still got this T20 here I am trying to sell, and the seals where the downpipe meet the muffler on one side have given up, and are dribbling 2 stroke splooge on the floor. The red rubber seals have given up.

The seals from Suzuki are of course NLA, so what does the group suggest to use in their place?

I just put All Balls fork seals and dust covers on an old Kawasaki, even though they were "old stock open box" they were still pliable and in good shape. I've used them on my bikes before with no problems.

Another vote for the PJ-1 flat black paint, that's what I always use.

Quote from: m in sc on August 10, 2024, 02:58:59 PMthats defiantly possible. or (more likely) the inner crank seal went and it was sucking transmission fluid.  :twocents:

Thanks Mark - no big surprise really, and probably why it got laid up with 6,500 miles on the clock.

I discovered interesting rock hard crustiness in one cylinder that won't budge. This is the exhaust side of the left piston, almost looks like the 2T sludge build up you get in the pipes. I've never seen this inside an engine before.

A friend suggested the PO had used car oil instead of 2 stroke oil and this is the residue of that?

Quote from: m in sc on August 03, 2024, 04:52:18 PMdid you just procure a 500 Simon?

Just this 250 in the 2 stroke part of the garage. The other new-to-me acquisition last month was a project KZ400, which should go in the 4 stroke blasphemy area.
