Turning Wrenches / Re: brake rotors

Double thanks to Chuck and Tuck for the info.  Good to know about the bolt on replacement.  A drilled rotor is on my to do list and this info is helpful when I get to it.

Brilliant!  I'll give it a shot.  Thanks to both of you.

You gotta start somewhere - and at least you have a start.  My rd existed w/o a seat for two years - but I still enjoyed riding it!  :righteous:  You're right about the hobby angle -- it is a continuous journey!

'76 RD400, I removed the front wheel to install new tire.  I reinstalled the wheel and now the wheel won't spin freely - the brake seems to be holding the disc.  I did not touch the brake while the wheel was off.  I believe the wheel went on correctly and is centered in the fork.  Should I remove the caliper and try to compress the piston?  :umm: I've made some sort of rookie mistake.  Thoughts?

Yes, Striker, I meant crankcase.  I swapped out the petcock for a Pingel I got from EC (Pingels are top notch--I run one on my HD custom chop).

I will heed everyone's advice about pulling the plugs and kicking it over w/o power to clear out any fuel that seeped into the crankcase.

Thanks-

Funny you should ask, I just dropped one into my '76 RD400 on Saturday -- bought it at O'reilly's (Super Sport GTX5LBS) and it fits perfectly.  Good price, too.  (https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/b/power-sport-agm-6113/battery-accessories-16452/battery---automotive-16864/battery-12836/aa237490c00e/super-start-power-sport-agm-group-size-btx5l-bs-battery/gtx5lbsj/6546209?q=superstart+gtx5lbs&pos=1

Good luck,

My '76 RD400 has been on a bike lift for about six months and this week started to smell like gas.  Before I put it on the lift, I did not drain the carbs but I shut off the fuel petcock and ran it until it died (figuring that mostly emptied the carbs).

Two questions:
1) Thoughts about what is causing the gas smell--do you think there was enough gas left in the carbs to leak into the engine oil?
2) What do each of you do before storing a bike for more than a month or so?

Cheers,

Turning Wrenches / Re: forks and the amount of fork oil

I asked the "what weight fork oil" question about a month ago and the consensus seemed to be 20wt, unless you are using emulators then 15wt.  Here is a link to my post and the replies:

Looks great!  It must be a deep sense of personal satisfaction too know you built nearly every damn bit of that bike!  Well done.

Turning Wrenches / What weight fork oil
January 14, 2020, 11:34:22 AM
'76 RD400 with stock forks.  The parts manual in the Tech section of this forum says 10, 20 or 30 weight oil in the forks.  I see fork oil on the shelf for different weights (5, 7 and 10).  What weight fork oil do you use?   (This is NOT meant to devolve into a debate about what type of engine oil is best) ;)
Thanks in advance.

If you have a recommendation for a Dallas TX (or near there) two-stroke mechanic or shop, please PM me.  OR reply here (if that doesn't violate forum rules about posting personal info).  Thanks!

Turning Wrenches / RD400 Tubeless Tires??
December 29, 2019, 03:08:55 PM
Can I run the BT45s without tubes on a stock 1976 RD400 wheel?  They are tubeless tires, but will they work on stock RD wheels without tubes?  If "yes" then why use tubes - any added benefit?

I apologize for the simplicity of this question.  I promise I searched the old posts.  I looked at old posts and saw Chuck's recent post with a link to Amazon for tubes to run on the RDs.  I am confused because HVC and Economy Cycle sell tires without tubes, etc.

Thanks in advance.
