Show Off / Sidi boots lived a long life
June 09, 2026, 08:16:46 AM
Time to refresh my 25 year old Sidi Verti 2 boots. Bought the same make and model. I guess these things held up very well. I did replace the soles 10 years ago. The Velcro on the flaps kind of wore out. One of the plastic heel protecters came off. The pad for shifting gave out. Leather is showing some weathering. These things really protect your feet and ankles. They are very comfortable too. $329. Made in Romania.

Quote from: 1976RD400C on June 09, 2026, 06:00:20 AMKeep in mind the RD400 has that ballast resistor ahead of the coils so voltage right at the coils is not going to be 12 volts.

The ballast resistor has been bypassed. This was recommended by Economy when installing their replacement coils.

There is nothing to do to the damper rod on a RD250 other than making the 2 big holes at the bottom a little bigger. Leave the pieces on there. Then put the aluminum adapter that should have come with the emulators on top of it, then the emulator. Check to see if those pieces fit together nicely and more or less form a seal.

Turning Wrenches / Bad sounds diagnosed.
May 31, 2026, 01:21:19 PM
The last few times I was out on my RD400 I noticed noises that were not normal as I came to a stop and it was idling. The first time, I'm like the piston is knocking? How, why, they were fresh oem pistons and the bores were fresh. The next time, no, that sounds like the clutch rattling. Why, how, there was nothing wrong with it when I had it apart, it even has those rubber o rings in the plates. I pulled the lever in, and the sound didn't change at all. Well, the last time out I decided I had to pull the clutch cover and inspect. Everything looked fine. Then I noticed the frame rail, The freaking motor is lying on the frame rail and trying to saw through it! The rubber motor mounts are shot. All good now, whisper quiet. There isn't much clearance down there and the 400 motor likes to wiggle around with the rubber mounts. Just a heads up, it sure made sounds that were very concerning. :vroom: Pics of the frame rail and clutch cover.

General Chatter / Gas guzzler on the interstate
May 30, 2026, 10:21:34 AM
I had my stock 400 on the interstate for about 80 miles yesterday. Indicated speeds 65-80 (I know it reads 5mph high). 4500-5500 rpm. Stock everything, gearing, air box, filter and carbs except a 120 main. Whole trip was 115 miles. 25 mpg and blew through 1/2 tank of oil. Couldn't make the 115 miles without a stop for fuel. It's funny the service manual says they get more than double that for mileage.  :umm:

Turning Wrenches / Re: Zeeltronic Review - RD350

Cool, sounds good. I notice the mid RPM range picks up power having an advanced spark. You can also check your tach looking at the programmer, my RZ seems to be very accurate. Also use the rev limiter for those missed shifts.

Check timing, B9 spark plugs, AV gas if you are worried, ride it, come back and say "holy crap!"

17.5 cc heads??  Most RD350/400 are around 24cc.

Taking a guess, it's not a mechanical problem, more like a lean pilot circuit or timing is off.

Turning Wrenches / Re: Wandering chain tension

The oem parts I have are a tight fit, in fact I couldn't pull the sprocket off by hand after removing the bolts. Had to tap it with a brass hammer to get it to pop off.

An oem sprocket hole is exactly 74mm
