Turning Wrenches / 75 RD350 Deals Gap Prep begins
April 23, 2023, 03:59:38 PM

Started on 3rd kick after setting 3 months and ran perfect. I just won a new to me speedometer off flea bay as the odometer reset function just shit the bed on the currently installed speedometer. The neutral light sometimes fails to light always cured by a light slap to the gauge face so that will be addressed by bulb change and or socket clean up. Other than that, adjust the chain and wipe it off and Bob's your Uncle. Hopefully the Phoenix Project will just need a chain adjustment and a wipe down. I did uncover it and saw no obvious leaks or other anomalies but it too has not been started in at least 3 months.

Show Off / Apache ( Harbor Freight) camera case
April 11, 2023, 05:21:49 PM

Thanks to Frank B for my HF gift card  for my birthday back in November. I just got around to using it. :patriot: :patriot: The HF brand is Apache. I am told it is similar to Pelican. They have them from small to long gun and every size in between. I caught this one on sale and got it out the door for $40 and change with my membership. The pre perforated foam makes fitting your stuff in there a breeze. Placing all my stuff took 15 minutes and now it is organized. It also has a pressure relief valve for putting it on an airplane. I have accumulated a lot of Go Pro stuff over the years and was toting it around in a small zippered bag with the cameras stuffed into Crown Royal bags and the rest of the mounts just thrown in around them.

Show Off / Vevor 30 liter ultrasonic 1st test
February 20, 2023, 02:54:28 PM

My DG chamber flanges and springs after 30 minutes in a pickle jar filled with 100% Krud Kutter degreaser from Walmart. Room temperature water. They were presoaked for 24 hours. I didn't take any before pictures but they were nasty. There was a little carbon and burned oil residue inside but the outsides cleaned up nice. I used a dremel with a wire wheel on the remnants of carbon inside the flanges and it came right off. I think if I had run them through a second time it may have gotten it all off. I am very well satisfied with the machine.

I have been busy so unpacking it and finding a place for it to live in the shop is as far as I have gotten. It is a Vevor 30 liter. I am planning on trying it out soon with the crusty calipers on the Gray Ghost RZ...

I am kicking myself for not keeping good records. I put an R6 cooling fan on my 1st 84 RZ350 and wanted to buy one for my 2nd 84 RZ350. But I didnt write down what year the fan came from. I found a cheap one on eBay for a 99-02 R6 and it is too thick to fit in the space. It has 5 big fan blades whereas the one on my 1st RZ is thinner and has 12 small blades. I am thinking 2003 to 2006 and the ones I am finding in that year range appear to be correct I but am seeking confirmation from someone who knows. Thank you

Show Off / Go Pro Anti-Jello Mount Experiment
November 13, 2022, 12:43:27 AM
Frank B gave me a camera mount for my Go Pro a while back and I tried It out on the handle bars using the mirror mount hole and got a lot of what I am told the drone guys call jelloing or shaky video. So I have been watching some how tos and doing some research. I bought an anti-jello mount made out of aluminum as I don't trust Chinese carbon fiber which is what most of them are made out of for $7 shipped and two tripod mounts for $12 each shipped. Then I made two small studs out of a 1/4 20 bolt and red loctited them into the tripod mounts. Then I used serrated washers so they would dig into the aluminum and tightened every thing down. Then I faced off the ends of the studs a bit with my bench grinder to make sure there was enough space so they couldn't touch and installed zip ties loosely at the corners in case of grommet failure. I hope to test it soon.

And so it begins. This is the RZ that my friend Karl Jones gave me that covered the guy from Cycle Drag in a large cloud of smoke when Mark and I cranked it in for its' 1st start in five or more years at the Deals Gap meet this year. I recently started the awakening and this is the 1st time I got it to run right and idle. The carbs were amazingly clean and the floats were a couple MM rich but for the life of me I couldn't get it to idle or fall back to idle unless the enrichner was on. This morning on what seemed like the 43rd time I pulled the carbs off I found

The hose that connects the enrichener circuit between the carburetors had a split in it. Every thing on the bike works except the tach and one instrument bulb. A previous owner apparently tried to drive the tach drive into the worm gear and bent the shaft. I will be running an electronic multifunctional after market cluster anyway so I will just cap off the tach drive hole. Frank B came over the other day and we shimmed the oil pump as it had 0 Gap up on the cam so we took a shim out of a parts pump and it is oiling a bit too much now whereas before there was no movement on the pump at idle and no smoke. Better a bit too much than not enough until I  get time to try a thinner shim and/or order some from Economy Cycle. It lives and supposedly has a fresh top end installed. It needs the usual stuff from setting. Brake calipers cleaned, new pads, fork seals and some Progressive Springs. The tank is full of scale and varnish so it has to get a dose of Cawell. All fluids changed and a set of new Avons. I also cannibalized the clutch cable off of it at the Gap when mine broke on the white RZ. Thanks to M in SC for the guidance and Frank B for the help. Much, much more to follow...

Turning Wrenches / Killed another NAPA digital flasher
September 11, 2022, 12:17:11 AM
Took the RD out for a short romp yesterday and noticed the turn signals stopped flashing about10 minutes into the ride. Another$10 flasher dead. I think the cause for this failure was my utilization of the factory turn signal flasher bracket and a piece of inner tube and tightened the mount up too tight. When I got back to the shop I shut the motor off and was greeted by a loud hum from the flasher unit. I was dreading pulling the tank off to change yet another flasher and decided on an alternative mounting location after cannibalizing a flasher unit off of my 73 H1D parts bike. I went back today and got the flasher grommet and tied it to the RD harness and put the flasher unit in the grommet. Cranked her up and all is well plus I dont have to pull the tank ever again to change a flasher...
