Need to remove the left crank case cover to replace gear shift rod seal. Is there a gasket between the cover and the engine? Do  I need to remove the generator cover also? Any tips would be very helpful.
Any secrets to replacing the seal? I have broken a screw on the right side cover screw before . I bought a Soto Pocket Torch. figured I would try and heat each screw before removing.
Thanks for any help suggestions. I work offshore and hopeing to get this done when I get off. Trying  to get the bike ready for the Harvest Classic Vintage Festival in Lukenbauch this October. Lots of nice lookin bikes were there last year.

As Always,  Thanks Bubba

Do you have a set of J.I.S. (Japanese Industrial Screw) screwdrivers?
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=j.i.s.+screwdriver+set&crid=2BL8GD8Z9BH25&sprefix=J.I.S.%2Caps%2C175&ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_6

Plus an Impact Driver like one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Screwdriver-Akindoo-Reversible-Piece-Screwdriver-Applications/dp/B07LB2C52V/ref=sr_1_46?keywords=impact+driver&qid=1565840116&s=gateway&sr=8-46

That will help remove the screws without goobering them up.

Apply a light smear of anti-seize upon reassembly for the next time.

I have both tools and JIS bits for the impact. I'm guessing it is as simple as removing the gear shifters and screws ? And everything comes off. Fingers are crossed.
Thank You , Bubba

Yes, generator cover comes off. Just  remove shifter, then all screws (except the 2  M5 screws for the clutch adjuster cover. Then pull off generator cover, then the main cover. If you struggle with the JIS screws, replacing with allen head M6 screws is a good idea. Just do not over tighten them when assembling, I use a small torque wrench set to 10 Nm.
And the pinch screw on the shifter needs to be pulled out completely before pulling the shifter off.

Once you have the cover off, drain the oil first, look at shaft, there is a clip, and washer covering the seal, not the best way to do it but can be done. You have to pickout the seal, try and use fine sandpaper (320) to debur the edge where the clip on the shift shaft was and not to rip the new seal going back in.
I cover the new seal in oil and have a aluminum tube I machined on the lathe to use as a seal driver to get the seal in with.
The best way how I do it is is to remove the shift shaft completely, by removing the clutch cover on the other side and remove the clutch and hubs to then pull the shaft out, replace seal then polish the seal area on the shaft then go back together after the seal is back in the cases.

Thanks for the help. Should be home Saturday. Firing up the pit and working on the RD. Hope I don't rip the gasket to the gen cover. Is there a good gasket source for discontinued gaskets?

Thanks, Bubba

The points cover usually comes off, (3 long bolts) there is no other gasket except the small round access cover for the clutch adjuster, if adjusted and working, you don't even need to take off the 2 bolts for it.
If the 3 bolt points cover is stuck, just leave it on too.

Yamaha still makes the clutch right hand cover gasket still new from Yamaha. Like $23 for it though, but the economy gasket kit comes with one.
Reed gaskets don't normally come in the gasket kits a lot of the time, so have to be ordered if doing a teardown of the engine.
