Daytona wheels on 76-78 RD400, what’s different?

I'd like to use RD400 Daytona wheels on my 76, I just like the look better. Supposed to be lighter but a doubt I'd notice... I know I've read the differences on one of the past 2sw boards but I can't remember. The rear sprockets are different so I'd need the correct one when I replace them, and the brake rotor spacing is different right? Grind on the caliper or use a spacer??

I can't find my detailed notes on this because it was so long ago. I think it was Diego that I helped with this when he did the swap. Damon did this on his blue '77 because he bought a XS400F front wheel from me, but I can't remember the details on his conversion. The XS400F front wheel is nearly identical to the RD400F front, with the exception of an added provision for dual disc.

-You are correct, the rotor offset is different.
-Front axle is different. '76-78 is 17mm and '79 is 15mm
-I don't recall the difference (if any) in rim mounting width

The difference in wheel weight is minimal between '76-78 and '79. For reference:
Wheel weight - RD400F
Front: (with powdercoat and bearings) 11.55 lb.
Rear: (with powdercoat, bearings, and sprocket studs) 16.15 lb.

For reference here are the bearing specs and part numbers:

I just did a Daytona rear onto a 1A1 swingarm...actually a DG swingarm. What a piece of CRAP!
Used the 1A1 brakes, and the only difference was the spacer on the right has to be shortened to 0.560".
...which makes it a ROYAL PIA to install.

So what I am doing now is replacing the 6204 bearing (20 x 47 x 14) with a 6005 (25 x 47 x 12) and make the spacer "captive" and 0.639" long.

Also just turn the outside of the stock sprocket down to 0.250", and use a front sprocket from a RZ and you've got a 520 kit (you need a 0.125" washer on the outside of the front sprocket).

Russ, I just went through an ordeal with all balls about the 79 rear bearings. They are the same as the C, D and E. The parts manual that I have for the Daytona has the incorrect part number also. The all balls guy told me that I must have earlier wheels on my bike. I was like, I don't think so bud. Anyway, I recently pulled out a 6303 and 6304 from my Daytona rear wheel.

All Balls bearing kits you need for Daytona wheels are...
Front:  25-1316
Rear:   25-1340

Thanks all !
I'm waiting for the wheel to arrive, it should have the axle and spacers with it. I'll mock it up first to be sure it all works before I order bearings and sprocket.

Thanks for the correction! I would have had a big surprise when I finally got around to doing my rear wheel. ;)  I've only done the front at this point.

It's strange that the error has existed in Yamaha parts records for 40 years! I can see it happening in a vintage OEM Parts List maybe once or twice, but you would think it would get revised over time. The current online parts fiche still shows the wrong part. I guess you never know.

No problem. When I went back and looked on the economy cycle website, John only list's one set of rear wheel bearings for all year RD400's. I should have just ordered from him and saved the two weeks of waiting on the refund from All balls. This isn't a knock on them as all parts fiche's have the wrong parts on them also.
