Noticed that Niche carries a reasonable electronic ignition

That's the Ebay special. Tytronic. I'm told if you like your machine running in reverse, buy one of these and enjoy.

I made the mistake of buying left and right handlebar switches from Niche, one was wrong, took 2 weeks, a few emails and multiple pictures sent, before they finally acknowledged the error and said they'd send return shipping label, they never sent it...

So I paid them $80 for 1 switch and I bought the other from John (Economy) for $60... I've been had.

lots of issues with those. fwiw, those are basically the cheapest garbage aircooled pertronix knockoff VW retrofit pickups.

that being said, i used a similar (better quality pickups) setup on the t500 i made myself. it was ok but def not performance oriented.

i use something similar on all my twins, except i get mine from simonbbc here in england. i use the fiat 500 type and make my own backplate. why use 2 pick-ups? you only need one, the red rotor ring has 2 magnets in it 180 degrees apart, so just run a wasted spark system. i started fitting the powerspark kit [with home made backplate] about 10 years ago - long before this bloke and others 'invented' this kit. i've run them without a problem on alsorts of engines - dt125, gt250, rg250, t10 and even fitted one to my old ajs 250csr. admittedly they aren't for max performance, but for everyday use what do you want for £35? i love them and at that price if they do break down, throw them away and fit another set - takes about 15 minutes to fit, or an hour if you're a novice  :tung2-1: :tung2-1: :tung2-1:
cheers, gil.
p.s. did i mention i love them? you can also get them from accuspark. just remember - the red rotor rings, not the black ones.

damn, they've gone up in price:

i did very similar setup using allison car igntions with a dual lead coil for years on rds. they work well.

on an automotive 4 cyl @ 5000 rpm, the coil fires 10,000 per revolution.  on a v8, double that. 20,000 firing cycles per minute. does it work? on a twin? yes. however, i left mine (the t500) with 2 pickups so i could revert back if need be and work the pickup 1/2 the amount. but, i may do wasted spark dual coil this go around.

So, we agree.

Pertronix units are still on my RD as well as our GT750. The key to keeping them from starting in reverse is to add an extra magnet so the timing is way off in reverse. It's the same strategy as the optic style units use.

I really need to get my HPI kit installed though.

^ yup.

increase the dwell time . the VS dynas are made the same way. ;)

My VS ignition still ran in reverse somehow. That's why I ditched the idea altogether and went Vape. Maybe my timing was way off. But, I don't see how using the dial gauge and watching the spark crack.

m in sc

beats me how that happens . almost impossible unless it was way off.  but.. again.. timing light.

Striker1423

I really need to just buy a not used-and-half-broken timing light. I know you posted an actron before. Would make sense since I tends to be inside my motor's frequently lol.

Regular Dyna or similar designs will run backwards.  I know my GT750 version did.

VS system uses dyna or similar pickups but I believe that he has extra magnets in the rotor so that if the thing kicked back, the timing would be so far off, that it cannot run.

Just kick it harder. The GT only did that once but it sure surprised me and took a moment or two for the brain to work out what was going on.

m in sc

thats exactly it. and exactly why dyna quit selling an rd unit a LONG time ago (they never figured that bit out).

Diablo007

O'Reilly Auto loans test equipment.  I borrowed a fuel pressure tester and noid kit to test the fuel injection on my Royal Enfield.  I'm sure they have timing lights.  I purchased a Bosch timing light that does 2 and 4 stroke engines from them for working on the dune buggy.

I was looking in the Tech Library for info regarding timing with a timing light but couldn't find a thread.  Would it be possible for someone familiar with the ins and outs of it to create a post?

Thanks
