I'm in the process of restoring a '76 RD400. Early on, I managed to destroy one of the carburetors. It was a stupid thing to do, but basically I thrashed the pilot jet threads beyond repair. I've been told that there's nothing that can be done for it. I'm embarrassed by the whole thing.
So I'm left with one working carburetor and need some options. It looks like a replacement from e-Bay isn't really one of them, from what I'm seeing. I'm not looking for additional power or anything like that. Just a running bike. I'd like to keep the oil pump and keep everything as simple as possible.
I see Economy sells a replacement set with oil ports, replacement cable, and jetting for $349.95 – $379.95. That's a little on the pricier side for my budget. What else can I do?
The details- Expansion chambers (unknown brand), currently no airbox (planning on using a 350 Y-boot), everything else is stock.
Any advice would be great.
Rob

Thanks! I appreciate it.
Man, that carb on e-Bay is rough! Do you think that would clean up? I'd be a little nervous about it.
ive saved way worse
If Mark does not have them, i have a set from my 76 with the dave F mod. new brass from Chuck a few years ago. jeted for Y-boot and DG pipes stock porting.

This might be my cheapest option. If you think it's salvageable. If you happen to have one you're willing to part with, please let me know. I'd rather go with a known good carb over one in "For parts or not working" condition.
If Mark doesn't have one another member Halmic might.
I believe I have one RD 400 right side carb still in the Yamaha box sitting on the shelf. If you are interested let me know and I'll get it out and look at it.

yup, have one. standalone RH 76-77-78 carb body, NO BRASS, airjet stock, has had brass ball removed for cleaning though.

gasket (used, stuck on body, but good)
float
idle stop screw
thats it. nothing else, but its good. let me know, i'll bring to work and i can ship out. I assume you are in the us?
PM me, i'll take pics.

Well... I'm at a loss, then. I'd like to take you up on your offer. I can send you the money via PayPal if that works for you.
Rob
i sent you an email directly, let me know if you get it.
I would encourage a different email, gmail accounts get snagged by most filters. i remove 40-50 spam accounts a day that are gmail accounts. just fyi.
shipped. should be there in a few days. ups ground from SC (near Charlotte, NC.) i emailed the tracking. :patriot:

I got the carb today. Thanks for getting it out so quickly.
I didn't realize from the pics how marred the ball tube was. It looks like it would be difficult to tap and fit a grub screw like I've seen others do. Any advice here?
leave it open. ? theres room to do it i think though. ive run a few sets open, never an issue
Interesting. I didn't realize that was an option. Should the ball on the other carb be removed to match?
Also, what's the best way to remove the main jet fitting from the old carb and fit in the new one?
yup, you can run them open. needs to be taken out to be cleaned anyway.
the jet tube? what -i- do is soak the carb, wd 40 or carb cleaner. take jet out, take washer out. thread just jet back in, no washer, *gently* tap the jet tube out towards the 'top' of the carb. if it wont move, soak more. better to use a jet you wont mind replacing.
Exactly what I needed to know. Thanks.
(Hopefully) lastly, any advice on removing the washer? Just a good soak?
washer under the main jet? just comes out. might need to pry a bit, but very little.
Just like Mark says above ^
I like to use a small flat head tip screw driver to pry gently. You won't hurt anything.

For stuck needle jets I use an old plastic chop stick and carefully tap it out after removing the main jet and washer. Works great and the plastic is soft enough that I've never had any issues with damage to the jet. For really dirty carbs I give all the pieces a once over with a toothbrush after disassembly then they go into the ultrasonic tank. Before I had the ultrasonic I used Berryman Chemdip
Thanks for all the help here. Hoping to get at it soon.
