Title: R1/R6 RD350 front disc conversion questions
Post by: Scuffed98 on September 10, 2025, 06:29:41 PM
Sorry if this has been covered a million times already.
I found the info about converting the front brakes with R1/R6 components. So does the R1/R6 rotors just bolt on to the stock rims or do I need spacers/adaptor plate to make it work? Does it matter what year of R1/R6 I take the brake components from? Would it be fine if I ran the calipers on the stock location or do I need to mount the caliper rearward? I would like to retain my stock speedometer if possible.

you can run it forward. you need the adapter, and an fzr600 rotor, and any blue or gold dot caliper.  would highly recommend a 12 or 13mm master cyl (a grom or zuma ones works nicely)

Does the FZR600 rotor need a spacer or can it just bolt straight on?

A spacer is required. 80mm x 6 bolt circle

You'll also need:
Rotor bolts, longer - 6pcs
Caliper mounting bracket, custom
Caliper mounting hardware

Do you know how big the ID and the OD need to be on the spacer?

I used 64mm ID, 109mm OD. The FZR rotor is about 63.8mm ID
Mine was mounted on a Daytona 2V0 wheel, but everything is the same as on the RD250/RD350/RD400 except for thickness.

How big does the bolt holes need to be for the hardware.

m8 for the rotor. m10 for the caliper.

What length and grade for the caliper and rotor bolts are recommended?

Thanks for all the info. I don't have any of the components on hand so I couldn't take measurements myself

You could make one but the easiest way is to unbolt the center section from a stock RD disk and cut off all but the center portion.  Spaces the FZR rotor perfectly

That's how I did mine.

I used Send Cut Send sendcutsend.com/ (https://sendcutsend.com/)
US made, choose your material, delivered in a few days with free shipping. It was about $38 for the last 6061 0.500" spacer I ordered. And I custom designed it right on their site with my dimensions. You can also upload design files.

A big thanks to the late Julian Farnam (Frame Maker) and to Ken (kpke) for introducing me to this great resource a few years ago.

I can machine these things in shop and unless im in a hurry I still use Send Cut Send or PCB Way. Materials costs are such that even when I get good deals I can't do it myself as cheap. A good 3/8" end mill is $20. Material another $10. Then an hour to machine. Might as well upload my file and go about life as somebody else makes it.

What thickness have did all of you settle on for the rotor spacer? The place I work at has a machine shop so it's really easy for me to ask the machinists to make whatever parts I need on the fly. So far, I've had them make a 13mm spacer. Should I get more made of different thicknesses in case I need to play around with spacing? The bracket and spacer is being made of 6061 aluminum and the bracket has a thickness of 10mm.

I also did a post about the exact length of all the hardware used.

When I did the disc upgrade on my Daytona, I measured the OE rotor bolts and then added for the thickness of the spacer. Pretty simple. If your calculations come up between common bolt lengths go with the shorter one.
For example: 37 mm then use a 35 mm long bolt. A few millimeters shorter won't have a big impact. If the bolts you select bottom out in the bores you'll have bigger problems.

(What I used will not apply to your application since the RD400F is different than the RD250/RD350/RD400.)

I just did this last year. You are going to end up putting washers between the caliper and bracket if you use the center of the RD disc spider with a 10mm bracket. The bracket needs to be 13mm. In USA everyone uses 1/2" and it works fine. Metric equivalent to grade 8 is 10.9. It looks better if you get Allen head or the original hollow Yamaha caliper bolts. Home Depot has bolts that work. Torque everything to stock RD spec. "Ugga-duggas" not good enough.

I used pro bolt stainless hardware. The ebay titanium hardware is also pretty nice.
