apparently the nut comes loose and smacks the case, or the drive comes off. man the build quality on those bikes is just absolute shit.

On that note, id like to have one but id never pay more than 1500-2k for a solid runner.

A friend of mine in Columbia SC bought an almost new one a year or so ago. He loves it,....He may not like it as much after I send him this article.

The old REs were very strong and followed the standards set by the erstwhile British maker. They have evolved over period of time to keep up with emission norms. To improve fuel economy, REs have gone through weight cutting in various places in the bike.

We have had reports of the complete front end breaking off from the frame neck!! These are doing rounds on the social media. But a lot of these media messages isn't true always.

However, there is a lot to be desired in their build quality.

i don't know, i'm on the RE FB owners group, quality issues, not surprising,y, are not uncommon, but they go into this knowing it. But weak castings are/would be a deal breaker for me. I used to want one sort of, but now, no way, maybe a used 500 for dirt cheap, like 800-1k.  No way id drop 5-7 k on one.   :twocents:

Speaking of 500's (in the US) here is a quick primer from a former owner.

The 'one to have' according to me is the 2001-2004 500 ES.  They were, other than the added electric start, the most true to the original design.  Iron barrel, Albion non-unit Trans, carbureted, drum brake.

By 2005 they began to evolve quickly, with a new unit box, then front disk brake and injection.

My 2004 was really a sweet bike, I miss it.  And I bet you CAN find them for cheap.  Often they were bought as a novelty, without the owner realizing that they need love and wrenching, or that they are NOT interstate bombers.  That's why you sometimes see them with only a few hundred miles on them...

yeah, ive always liked british bikes and wanted a single forever, at times. I remember when they were just being brought into the states. thought it would be neat but at time did not seem feasible, maybe i'll run across one and make it happen one day, but im not actively searching.

The trouble is I haven't heard of many serious issues with the new twin 650's. Quite the opposite in fact. I wouldn't touch a single with a 10 foot pole and you pushin' though.

m in sc

the 535 twins had issues, for sure . theres been less with the 650s.. so far. you're right there.
