Powdercoating rd400 wheels

Who has experience powdercoating rd400 wheels. Did you remove the crush drives? I was going to remove mine but ran into a problem. I have come up with a new method to remove them if needed. Powder will be baked at 410 c

Yes, you need to remove the bushings first.

Ok I saw a video on YouTube about removing them on a rd400 euro spoked hub with same style crush drives. They thread the hole and use ready rod to exract it out. I tried that technique but inside the rim isn't a flat surface so the ready rod moves around and bends. Was thinking about making a puller and useing ready rod again and a nut. Anyone else pull or press these before, and how did you do it?

I was able to successfully use the threaded rod and heat method on 3 bushings on my cast wheel. The center pulled out on the last one- maybe the rubber got too hot on that last one. I carefully cut it out.

It turned out just fine.

When you go to push the new ones in, do they bottom out in the hole? Is it even possible to press the old ones into the center of the rim?

Yes they bottom out. There is a lip they catch on. You won't be able to push them through.

Freeze the bushings overnight and heat the hub. They drop in pretty easy with a few taps.

Why are you baking your wheels so hot? This is not necessary. Even 400f is too high.

The powder I use is almost always baked over 400 c. When I clear I bake at a lower temp then recommended for a longer period of time to avoid runs or turning the clear yellow. I also out gas the metal at about 430 c before it sees powder. I no pro yet but I have done over 500 pieces over the years with consistent results.

I'm going to powdercoat my wheels too.
Do the crush drives get destroyed when they're pulled out? Do you have to buy new ones?

Yes, you'll need new ones. I have an extra set that I bought from Yambits. I would sell them to you for what I paid for them. I think it was around $55. You'll save on shipping.
