I bought an RD400 gas cap, Emgo I guess.  Looks good, I hoped to swap out the lock to continue using the stock RD400 key.  Doesn't seem possible.  The key profile on the aftermarket cap is opposite of the original key.  If there is no way to swap out the lock, I wonder if I can drill out the lock from the inside so that any key will open it?

Can you take the lock cylinder out?

Hawaii-Mike

I tried and didn't get it out.  Maybe if I try harder, but I don't want to break the lock.

I bought a cap on eBay and was able to swap the lock. Maybe yours is different?

I can swap out the entire lock mechanism but the original is rusty on top.  That's why I'd like to swap out the lock internals or ream out the new lock so that any key will work.

Here's a comparison of the undersides of the two locks.  The angles are exactly opposite.

That's why I'm wondering if I should drill out the replacement lock from the bottom, hoping to make enough space for the original key to go in and turn the locking mechanism with minimal damage to the top.

WITH THE LOCK OUT YOU CAN SWAP JUST THE CYL.

Mark do you mean the entire mechanism as pictured or the internals to the cylinder.  The top part of original lock (not shown) is all rusty.

As for taking the cylinders apart, I looked at them and haven't figured out how to take one apart without destroying it.
