Loose Can on Milleniums…

Time for winter maintenance.  One to-do is fix the loose can on one of my MC Milleniums.  The pipes are from Dougs last run, purchased new from him in 2016.

The can is riveted to the pipe via a flange,  but the flange that it's riveted to is 'loose'.  I'm able to rotate the can a few degrees back and forth.  An attempted JB Weld 'fix' lasted about five minutes on the road.

I checked with Garret for his opinion but as they aren't his version, he can't say what the fix is but suggested I drill out the rivets and take the can off.

It looks like the flange  that  the can is riveted to is letting go, but I really can't tell how THAT (see arrow in pic) part attaches to the pipe itself.   Is it welded?

i think so, yes, take rivets out and get it welded.

Well pretty disappointed in what I found:

- I drilled out the rivets and the can will NOT come off the flange.  I tried persuading it but no.  These pipes were ceramic coated when new, perhaps ceramics got into the joint where the red arrows point?
- After a good cleaning and inspection it looks like the flange has torn where the blue arrows point, all the way around.  I can twist the can but it doesn't slide up/down.

I think I'm just going to try to get a bead welded around that joint to secure the flange then re-rivet.

Local welding shop is gonna run a bead around it, let see how that turns out.  Pickup is tomorrow...

You should get them to add a reinforcing tab to the top of the weld between the stinger and rear cone. Ive seen quite a few posts about those welds cracking and the silencer taking off on its own.

Good idea, let me see if I can catch him this morning before he welds it...

Well it finally got up to a more comfortable temp here - 30 degrees so I got it sorted.

Perhaps not the most artistic bead, but solid:
