They're still out there.....picked up this 1974 GT250 at an auction yesterday. Pretty much all there and original down to the nylon Inoue tires and the tool kit found under the side panel, but you can see it will need quite a few parts to bring it back to its best.

Engine is stuck, center stand is stuck, gas and oil tanks are dry and the master cylinder is full of powder. So it's my next project as soon as I make a bit of space in the workshop and get the current ones out of the way.

Wish me luck......

-RD motor. done.

and congrats!

A friend of mine had a 185 that I rode a bit commuting to college that was pretty nice.  I know the TC185's were the best deal for a dirt bike for weight vs power but don't know about the GT series.

This is my second GT250 - I restored a GT250B about 30 years ago as my first vintage bike project. So I have always wanted another. When they came out, the press described it as the first 250 to legitimately hit 100mph, and I never had problems getting it past 95mph whenever I wanted to (closed roads, honestly officer....). Pretty good for a piston port engine on stock gearing. Comfortable for longer rides and commuting too, so a great all-rounder.

Suggestions for getting the stuck pistons moving again would be welcome at this point.

I have the plugs out and have some ACF50 down the bores right now, and waiting patiently. Any other magic fluids you lot swear by?

Time to invest in some propane, then !

Just this 250 in the 2 stroke part of the garage. The other new-to-me acquisition last month was a project KZ400, which should go in the 4 stroke blasphemy area.

I heard the deal fell through Saturday possibly in person as the offer was too low...

I discovered interesting rock hard crustiness in one cylinder that won't budge. This is the exhaust side of the left piston, almost looks like the 2T sludge build up you get in the pipes. I've never seen this inside an engine before.

A friend suggested the PO had used car oil instead of 2 stroke oil and this is the residue of that?

thats defiantly possible. or (more likely) the inner crank seal went and it was sucking transmission fluid.  :twocents:

Thanks Mark - no big surprise really, and probably why it got laid up with 6,500 miles on the clock.
