It was doing so well!

Riding home last night and the motor started cutting power off and on at random. It would run one cylinder spurt in both,  backfire  etc. Then it began backfiring and only running on one cylinder the whole time.  I thought it was a fouled plug. So I swapped the plugs and the bike did the same thing. So I got it quasi-running and took it home at 30mph because it wouldn't take throttle without backfiring a bunch. Plugs looked ok except the right one was evenly coated in black soot.

So I wonder if my coil is dying, the ignition system is dying, or the top end went.  I figure the top end is probably ok as the power was returning completely randomly between backfires. I'm thinking something electrical. The only thing I noticed leading up to this was the headlight at night started getting bright and going back to normal at a steady speed. So I think maybe the voltage regulator gave up.

On a side note I've put just about 1800 miles on the bike this summer. So I'm happy about that :). And I was planning on replacing the main wiring harness and voltage regulator rectifier this winter as I like peace of mind. Seems too late now but oh well.

Checked the battery, it was sitting at 12.25 volts. Kicking it over this afternoon caused backfires again. So, I'll have to buy a fresh set of plugs to see if that fixes it, but It's hard to imagine what it might be. Might try pulling the side cover off and seeing if the dyna plate is loose or something.

Well the right cylinder is sparking three times in a row and the left sparks once. So I figure the dyna is too close to the pickup,  but I went to verify the timing and I dropped my gauge. So now its gonna get shipped to central tools for repair. Haha figures ha?

Check your timing
  "  your brushes if you have points or Dyna
Look at fuel flow out of petcock- clogged flow
Then check electrical

I'm not sure what type of bike you're running, but if it has reeds give them a look. When the reeds aren't functioning you can get a wild mix of symptoms. At the worst, it's an easy thing to check.

I will check the reeds but I read where someone had a magnet fail and even though the charging system was working I think it failed during to the problems I was having so I have a feeling the rotor fried and the bike needs a new regulator rectifier.

SUPERTUNE

Save up over the winter and axe all the stock RD ignition/charge crap and go Powerdynomo/Vape cdi.

In the meantime re-solder the wire joints coming from the pickups on Nicks Dyna conversion kit. RD's kill his crimps, (should have been soldered anyway from the beginning IMO)

HPI ignition is cheap, easy to install and you will have WAY easier stating and noticeably better performance.
