Has anyone ever sold a higher dollar item on eBay, let's say the $10,000-$20,000 range?  I am trying to help my dad get rid of some old cars he has and I am thinking about eBay to get a broader audience.

How do you handle the money end of things?  I don't really want that much money going into a PayPal account.  I was thinking have a $500-$1000 non-refundable immediate deposit made through PayPal and the rest payed in person within 7 days.

And what is the best way to get a lump of money?  Cash, cashiers check, balance transfer?

Is eBay even worth trying to deal with for something like this?  I've really try to not sell anything on there but sometimes you need to.

I purchased a motorcycle through eBay.  The buyer puts 500$ into an escrow account through pay pal.  Then you handle the balance with the seller however you two decide.  Both people agree to the sale through eBay/pay pal, the 500$ Is then released to the seller through pay pal.  At least that's how we did it?  If you meet somewhere neutral be sure you both have WiFi you both need to ok the transaction through eBay/pay pal.

Be sure as a seller you are aware how much you will lose to eBay/pay pal, it can be a lot..  as a buyer, it worked perfectly for me. FWIW.

Also, if you do get paid completely through pay pal, it will take 2-3 days to get your money, they make sure the sale is all good with every one before releasing.

I guess the escrow account was because you didn't look at the bike first and it gave you a chance to back out?  Was that auction or buy it now setup that way?

I believe all "buy it now"'s are set up that way.  As soon as you click buy you must put in the 500$ deposit through pay pal.  You then have 2 weeks to complete the transaction.

Yes, it was a buy it now and that is the only time I did something of high dollar value through eBay.

I've sold a couple vehicles on Ebay.  I live in Ohio.  One was a Sportster that went for about $4k and was shipped to Washington.  The other a Camaro that went for about $8k and it went to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.

Both transactions were over 10 years ago and I don't recall what I had for lunch today.  Can't help much with details of the transaction.  Both buyers sent some down payment via Paypal.  I think the guy who bought the bike sent me a cashier's check or something for the balance.  The remainder of the car payment was made by bank transfer.

It wasn't my responsibility to get the car to Canada but I do believe that there were two shippers involved.

The guy who bought the bike nearly died of a head injury when the bike was delivered.  There was a bad snow storm and he slipped and fell on his way out the door to meet the delivery truck.
