Olive Passivate color in a spray can?

Not sure it was used much on the 70's bikes but, Olive Drab passivate plating is everywhere on 80's steel Yamaha cycle parts and fasteners.

I'm sure I can find a plating company here to do the real thing, but has anyone had much luck mimicking this finish with a spray can?

I'm not wanting to apply a thick coat of paint, coz obvs that won't look right at all.  Seems tho, a light fog of the right color might work to clean up bits where the plating has corroded or worn off.   Prob won't be very durable, or fuel safe, but for cycle parts away from the engine it might work.  I'm just not down with painting it all black, which looks even worse (to me) than the worn plating.

A couple years ago on a Guzzi forum guys were trying to replicate this. The words zinc chromate come to mind and Tenni edition.

Lol, nope.

Italian Olive and Camp Green are a no go.



Have a can of Rustoleum Charleston Green on order. We'll see how that goes

Yup.

The stock olive zinc chromate (brake pedal) is like mostly satin black with just a whiff of dark olive green.

The painted horn bracket looks like it came off an army jeep.  All wrong.  Just gonna hit it with satin black and move on for now.  I'm not doing a full concours resto on this thing anyway.  I just wanted to clean up some of the deteriorated plating as I go, but if it's too nice it'll make everything else look worse (or at least that's what I'm telling myself).

Definitely post up some pics when done. I couldn't find the olive drab when I did my Daytona so I settles on the black chromate. It came out fine but not original.

Meter Bracket it painted with the above pictured RAL 6006 Grey Olive Satin.  Brake pedal is, of course, 39 year old OG Yamaha.



OG Yam is a bit darker but very close.  Main dif is the OG zinc chromate looks black in indirect light, but iridescent green in sunlight.  The painted parts don't change color with lighting.  Close enough for me, and way more convenient than stockpiling all the olive parts and taking them to the plater's en masse, as I'm working my way thru the bike and not doing a total strip and re-assemble.
