Is it a myth than when you open a good working engine you should find a puddle of 2 stroke oil in the crankcase.

I just opened a rd400 and the components are well coated with thick 2 stroke oil, but there is no puddle in the bottom.

The bike has autolube and average 32:1 to 40:1 Oil ratio depending on how fast I ride.

your ratio should be a lot lower than that on the pump.

ive opened them as you state and not nec seen a puddle but working ok otherwise.

I suspect the higher Oil ratio because it is a "pink dot" oil pump?

What do you average with the regular pump?

I cant quote off the top of my head, but i know it was lower than that. chuck might know, there was discussion about this a long time ago. -maybe- it was closer to an average of 40:1 overall but my recollection is it was quite a bit lower than that.

My YZ250 always had a fair sized puddle whenever I opened her up. Ran 40:1

I've seen a puddle more often than not when I've taken them apart.

Wouldn't it mostly depend on how the engine was ran just before it was shut off, last time it was used before disassembly? If it was running pretty much wfo, then shut down quickly, I would not expect much oil in the crankcase.

yes. ^ also how long it sat and if the pump checks (if on the pump) are seeping a bit.  :twocents:

As a totally irrelevant side note, my mid-50s Villiers 12D 125cc engine has a crankcase drain plug. Presumably for draining excess oil, or excess fuel if flooded.
