On my 1972 Yamaha CS5 200 the tachometer has three indicator lights going left to right, Green/Neutral, Amber/Flasher and Red/?   it has a C next to it on the meter. :umm:

charge, since its a generator vs an alternator. my yl1 has the same indicator. it will glow at times at idle.   :twocents:

That is what I figured but wanted to be sure, I searched my service manual and did a internet search and found nothing on the tachometer indicator lights. I am not having any issues and after starting it disappears but once in a while at idle it does turn on.

My high beam indicator is on the top of my headlight bucket on this model, I also thought for a second that was the case.

Yep, the red indicator on the right in the tach is for charge.
N = Neutral
F = Flasher
C = Charge

I just worked on a CS5 recently for a guy and one of his complaints was that the red charge light was always on. The issue turned out to be worn out generator brushes. The bikes had just a few more miles than yours (9500 mi) so I would recommend checking them. There are 4 brushes; part # 173-81111-10-00. They are 8 x 4.5 x 20L mm

The bike owner had 2 and 2 additional ones were bought off eBay. They were not cheap! Here's some info on them:

Yamaha 173-81111-10-00
8 x 4.5 x 20 mm, Hitachi CG-6R-1(carbon graphite) marked "33"

When we had difficulty finding the correct part I did find out that YL1 brushes are very similar but not sure if they're the same material or will work. They have almost exactly the same dimensions but are marked "23" instead of "33".
Yamaha 141-81111-10-00
Actual measured dimensions: 7.85 x 4.87 x 20.1 mm

Possibly, the dimensions are similar but they are also marked "23" like the YL1 parts.

Since it is a generator, the 'C" light also tickles the armature to get going(generating)

Dim or flashing is normal at idle.

Some have to jumper armature to battery to get magnetism back, once it's lost.
