Turning Wrenches / Identifying daytona cylinders
April 28, 2023, 01:56:07 PM
I'm looking at buying some rd400 cylinders here in Canada. The guy selling doesn't know what he is looking at. He has a few daytona parts in his collection. How do I tell what year the cylinders are from?  Also I know the euro 2r9 cylinders are sought after. Are the Canadian 3j7 cylinders simular? Can I run them on my 77?

Turning Wrenches / Rd400 damper diffrences
January 29, 2023, 04:35:31 PM
I read an old article on rd suspension recently that stated the early 76 rd400 came with a 13mm damper rod and the later ones had the improved 17mm ones. Is this accurate? Where am I measuring mine to find out what I have? The center shank I assume. Thanks

Turning Wrenches / Vintage smoke rear master
January 25, 2023, 09:46:10 PM
I have the vintage smoke rear sets for the rd400 c/d/e models. I remember a couple years ago when I installed them having the banjo bolt thread in with difficulty. I used the supplied banjo/ brake light switch from VS. Did I get the wrong pitch one, and can anybody confirm what brembo master is used for this? Google images show it looks similar to a 2007-2008 yamaha r1 rear master. Intimidated to take the bolt out without having the correct parts on hand. Haven't been able to get a reply from Nick at VS for a couple years

Turning Wrenches / New ignition switch
January 13, 2023, 05:36:08 PM
I'm planning on cleaning up my dash on my rd400 and would like to relocate an ignition switch. I've seen it done in the frame gusset by the horn or in the headlight. I'd like to use a yamaha switch but I've come across a Honda cb750 switch that looks like it would mount easier into a hole. What switches have you guys used in the past for this type of thing. I've noticed varying numbers of wires out the back on diffrent ones

Turning Wrenches / Cutting daytona head
January 13, 2023, 04:55:13 PM
I've got a daytona head I would like to get cut in half at a local machine shop. The plan is to send it to John ritter to get turned on his lathe but he can't cut it in house. I've seen them cut 2 ways. Offset on the middle fin with a hole drilled in the center and chucks way which is dead straight down the center splitting the middle fin. Does anyone know which way is better? I like the offset way better but chuck must do his centered for a good reason. Any input?

Turning Wrenches / HHB speedo delete
January 11, 2023, 03:02:55 PM
Was browsing the web and came across this xs650 speedo eliminator. I know there's lots of similarities in these front wheels with the rd350's and rd400's. I emailed the owner of HHB and he stated he believes they will fit on the rd's aswell. Anyone here know forsure?

I've had my vintage smoke rear sets for my rd400 for a couple seasons now and really like them. The only issue I have with them is the exhaust hanger bushings. They wear out super quick if you take the pipes off a couple times. What are you guys doing as a replacement for these. I've tried countless times to reach out to nick at vintage smoke with no reply. Someone on here mentioned it was possibly a Harley Davidson part. Went to the HD parts counter today and nobody there recognized them let alone seen clear parts on a Harley. I know I'm not the only one with this issue. How do I replace these bushings!

Turning Wrenches / Case sealant
July 16, 2022, 03:18:57 PM
Finally had the chance to assemble my bottom end on my rd400 and sealed the cases up with permatex motoseal as suggested by Chuck. It's be sitting now after two weeks and where the sealant oozed out it feels squishy still. Is that how it sets up or does it get rock solid? I mixed the tube before use and it's been warm in the garage.

Turning Wrenches / Case torque specs
June 04, 2022, 07:42:41 PM
I have the yamaha manual for my rd400 and it shows the 8mm nuts torqued to 2nm (17.7 in lbs). My torque wrench only goes down to 20 in lbs. Is it going to be ok to go up to 20 in lbs on those? I've heard the 6mm bolts like to strip easy so I was going to torque those by feel with a 1/4inch drive with my hand to the very top. They don't take much and you need a fancy digital torque wrench for those.

Turning Wrenches / Installing shaft plugs
June 03, 2022, 06:58:01 PM
Finally able to assemble my bottom end on my rd400. Tried tapping in the transmission shaft plugs and had one mushroom over on me. It might not have been 100% square going in and I did not put lube on it. Is there some trick to this I'm missing? Don't wanna ruin 2 more, they are $15 a piece.

Turning Wrenches / Throttle not returning
May 15, 2022, 11:32:28 PM
My rd400 throttle won't return on its own. I've lubed the cables but no luck. The throttle tube doesn't look worn. Does it simply just need a new cable set? Is there anything else it could be before I go buy one?

Anyone know where I can find a wiring diagram for my 78 rd400 canadian model. I'm having trouble finding one. Is there another one that would work?

Turning Wrenches / Selecting rim width
March 12, 2020, 08:38:07 PM
Need a hand choosing rim diameters for my rd400 from buchannons. It's for the 18" shouldered rims and they list 1.6, 1.85, 2.15, 2.50. I was thinking it would be safe to upgrade to Daytona widths. But what about the 2.5 option. Is that just too wide? I will be running a dg swingarm. What's eveyones thoughts

Turning Wrenches / Porting reed cages
March 08, 2020, 10:46:40 PM
Just wondering at what stage in a build would you benefit from ported stock reed cages. I've got the basic y boot with cross over tube and Dave f carb mod. Would I need port work to justify doing this?

General Chatter / Vintage smoke still in business??
March 07, 2020, 10:34:24 PM
I've been trying to email and call Nick for a while now regarding some rear set exhaust hanger bushings. He has not got back to me.  Is he still in business? Is there any other bushings I can use?

Turning Wrenches / Small end road bearing options

I've seen somewhere that there is an upgraded small rod bearing. What are my options?

Turning Wrenches / Rd400 large sprocket washer
February 28, 2020, 11:01:00 PM
My rd400 has rear sprocket wobble. It looks like the mounting surface on the wheel is mushroomed over a bit from mileage or from previous owner buffing it with an air tool or something. I was looking at the spacer washer behind the sprocket snap ring. I was wondering if it was worn or tampered with. It measures out to an average .0765 in. Does anybody have one lying around that they can measure to confirm. The part is no longer available.

Turning Wrenches / Powdercoating rd400 wheels
December 30, 2019, 09:07:12 PM
Who has experience powdercoating rd400 wheels. Did you remove the crush drives? I was going to remove mine but ran into a problem. I have come up with a new method to remove them if needed. Powder will be baked at 410 c
