Turning Wrenches / Re: RZ clutch
May 16, 2022, 05:17:20 PM
I was just going to post a similar question for my RZ's clutch, it was getting grabby last year.  Thought I remembered something about FZR clutch plates... I'll be picking up a set.  Good timing!  I believe I have 3 Barnett springs and 3 stock springs.  Will have to check lengths to see if I can re-use them.

Front brakes or rear?  I have an FZR front caliper with simple adaptor plate on my Daytona.  Common upgrade.  Uses stock master cylinder and rotor, huge difference.  Not sure about rear brake upgrades but I rarely use it.  HVC Cycle makes reproduction replacement pistons.

General Chatter / Re: Daytona Special dual disk brakes?

I have a simple adaptor plate and FZR600 4-piston calipers with the stock master cylinder on my Daytona.  The ratio works out to about the same as stock as I recall, and I'm happy with the way it feels.  Huge improvement in braking.   You could try that and upgrade the M/C later if you don't like the feel.

Got the new needle valves and that seemed to do the trick!  Plus some fresh gas.  Hasn't run this well in a while.  Maybe a bit rich, have 155 mains, but it pulls so hard 7000prm+  with the porting and everything that I feel like it will rip the bars out of my hand when I go for the clutch!

Turning Wrenches / Re: Help! with a Dyna S

I had a problem years ago with an aftermarket electronic ignition on my GS1000 with wire crimps so that is a good thing to check.  It wasn't fun riding 50 miles home with only 2 of 4 cylinders firing.  If crimped properly with the right tool  the crimps do not need to be soldered.  The problem I found was that the wired had been tinned (coated with solder) before being crimped.  That is not how the crimps were designed to work, the wire needs to be bare stranded before being crimped.  You can solder it afterwards if you want.  So double check the crimps, hopefully it is something simple.

Turning Wrenches / Setting float height on PWK carbs
August 05, 2019, 07:32:54 AM
I was looking into a problem on my Daytona with Keihin PWK28 carbs over the weekend.  Found float height was high on both sides by a couple mm - supposed to be 19mm.  Got one carb adjusted nicely but couldn't get the other set right.  Turns out the spring loaded plunger on the needle is stuck.  Weird, have never seen this happen before, anybody else?  Going to get a new set of needles to try.

Check out the TSA pipes (Two Stroke Addicts) by Kenny in the UK.  I got the stainless pipes with CF silencers, they are awesome for street, great mid range.  I will try and get a photo to post.  Not cheap but happy with mine.

Turning Wrenches / Re: Each day, a new adventure

Yeah.  Still got the Daytona you worked on a few years ago too (head and cylinders).  It was having some issues that I haven't sorted out yet.  Electrical maybe, intermittent, runs good then one side acts up.  Hopefully can find some time to look at it this weekend.  Got 3 out of other 4 bikes on the road and running: '85 RZ (blinker problems), '07 GT1000 (for sale), '05 K1200S.

Turning Wrenches / Each day, a new adventure
July 17, 2019, 09:01:50 AM
Finally got the RZ350 out a couple weeks ago.  Every day is a new adventure on this 34 year old bike.
First start, leaky fuel line and oil line at connections.  Trimmed and reconnected, no big deal.
First ride, to inspection station, hose to coolant recovery tank rotted and leaking coolant all over.  Truck ride home.  Replaced coolant line and all fuel lines.
Second ride to inspection station, fails due to broken wire inside blinker.  Repaired, but then rear blinker falls off.  Aftermarket blinkers from Lockhart Philips which have lasted several years but now they are trash.  Who makes a decent LED blinker that fits the RD/RZ?  Lots of choices out there.
Third ride, to work, on way home the horn just starts going off by itself.  Short in wiring maybe?  Who has seen this before?  Yanked wires off.
Can't wait to see what adventure is next!  The good news is it is running well and still a blast to ride.

The stock Daytona kicker is angled different than '78 and earlier models for clearance around the stock footpegs.   It fits fine with my MC rearsets without needing bending like with the earlier models.  The Aluminum HVC Daytona kicker also fits fine and is lighter and less weight.
