Yamaha workshop manual says 'check circumferential play - if excess play, replace'.  But it doesn't define what is 'excessive'.

Mine has play of about 3mm - is this fine?  Video reference: https://photos.app.goo.gl/sKZY5ST1JaGdUL1MA

Mine was way more than that but it was stiffer to turn as well. I rebuilt mine with a new billet banshee basket. Was easy to do.

My understanding is that you can repair by drilling out the rivets, tapping the casting and replacing the rivets with button-head allen screws of the appropriate size and grade with lots of loctite. Size would depend on how oblong the holes have become. ...But replacing with the Banshee basket is easier and "better" for several reasons.

Mine is just as bad. I think a long way from coming apart but I don't like the driveline play coming on and off the throttle. I will replace with a Banshee unit soon.

Thanks, guys.  While I have the thing open I suppose I'll just swap out the basket and save myself the hassle later on.  Like most of the people on here, i'm at the "I've already sunk $X into the bike - what's another $100?" point.

Any particular billet basket you recommend (76 RD400, fyi)?  The Hinson comes up a lot, but don't need something that high end.

This is the exact one I used, comes with the cushions, that is what is worn out, just drill your old rivets off and throw the old basket and plate away. You will see how to install the rubber cushions it's easy https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F282584662669

+1 the chariot basket is what I bought as well. Super easy to do.

Ordered the Chariot off eBay.  8)

Surprised none of the standard stores (Economy, HVC, Mikes) carry spare clutch baskets.  I feel much more comfortable buying parts when John certifies that they work with my bike!

For future reference, your basket looks fine.  This is all you really needed:

Carefully grind the heads off the rivets from the back side.  Drive the rivets out with a punch.  Remove the broken bits of the old cushions. Run a 1/4"-20 tap through the existing rivet holes (no need to drill them).  Clean everything. Fit new bushings, fit old cover plate, install with 5/8' long 1/4"-20 bolts (grind the heads thinner to about 1/8" thick) and just a dab of Loctite.
If your basket 'fingers' are really notched, by all means you should replace the basket.  But most aftermarket baskets are heavier than stock.

+1 desmodrew.  I just did two that way.  If the basket is OK, no need to replace it.
