This was well over a year after I built it and 7500 miles later with just plugs and a new throttle junction block...

Haha, is this when you showed up with a "street" bike for a quick pull at the the track and it out pulled the race bikes?
Man that thing sounds great!
Haha, love it.

Still making great power with some miles on them!

What pipes are on the RD Charlie Stg 1 bike?

Any 350 dyno pulls?

paul1478

all 3 are spec II F1s same pipes.
BLAST to ride!

I'm trying to upload my Yellow Screamer dyno run, but too long...trying to learn a video editor to upload.
I'm a dummy when it comes to this stuff. Trying to learn Blender now.  :umm:

Nick's '76 RD400 STG 1 build

I have local shop that has a Dyno at Tonner Motorsports to run Nick's '76 RD400.
But they did burn the RPM lead on a 4 stroke header last week and was repaired, but we couldn't get it to read!
Being a eddybrake dyno the load was too high on the roller and won't compute a reading.
This was a 3rd to 4th gear shift pull, dyno room shop was to hot also, so RD ran real rich. Need to put in a cold/fresh air system hopefully if the landlord will let them.

You can see me fussing with the RPM clip lead...

You could upload to Youtube and link here. Heck, you could do howtos on youtube too and start your own channel.

I think its time to go to the final overbore size, so I can catch up to Paul's hp #'s lol

Here's Dan's '74 RD350 racebike not quite a STG  2, more like a STG 1-1/2.
Race gas VP110, PVL magneto, only has VM 30's (going to 34's next year-2020) Spec 2 F1's. TDR single race reeds on my ported stock cages, banshee manifolds and my TSR/Barlow designed boost bottle
This was at Barber Vintage Festival in Oct '19.
We had fought this RD all year and blew it up a few times.  :umm: I did the engine build mail order and customer assembled it
and I helped him tune it with my guidance.
So after the last rebuild I was able to meet up with the bike in person to find what was going on with it at Talladega in Sept.
Turns out the factory timing engraved markings were incorrect!
The PVL had way to much timing and was the reason we were having runaway EGT's and we kept jetting it so rich it to keep from melting the piston
it wouldn't make power!
Turns out the timing was off by 1.2 mm on the factory PVL marks!
So instead of the pvl timing at 1.9mm it was 3.1mm...holy crap, no wonder we were having problems.
Now with my tools I was able to VERIFY with a dial gauge and a timing light and was able to start working at the tune at the Talladega races and he was able to finish all 4 races that weekend!  :metal:

Then came to Barber the next race...and we put it on the dyno, we saw we were still rich on jetting from Talladega.
Watch it fall off at the top and lose power.

Now time to rejet the carbs down from 350's to 330's on the mains.

We also can see we have some room to try a smaller pilot next time as we ran out of time before his races.
we didn't worry too much about that as its way off where you run it on the track at speed.
Plus it was record heat at upper 90's and even was over a 100 earlier in the week!
from checking with my Dyno guys log everyone's #'s were down 3-4 HP from the excessive heat that weekend.
So this makes the numbers even better once we get some better air...

Come time to race again at Roebling Road Raceway I may rejet again depending how cold it is in Feb.

Enjoy!

Oh, and by the way Dan finished 4th and 5th in his races!
So my tally of TSR built and tuned engines... I got 3 in the top five finishers at this huge event!

While at Barber I met up with Tim N from Birmingham, Al.
I helped him straighten up other issues with another engine machinist who IMO cut his heads
way to much for street pump gas. Tim said he was having some detonation and hurting the pistons, I showed him how to do a CC check on his heads and then
we decided he needed to send them to me for a better look.
I decided to recut them and lower squish ratio about 2% and drop the CC's some as well.

Tim's is I believe a '75 RD250 with a 350 conversion top end and all stock porting other than 64.50mm bore and sent them out for nikasil plating to help the
bores to live longer and make a bit more power for stock.
Has a MBZ powerdynomo-vape cdi @ 1.8mm  and a set of pwk 28 carbs and dual stage uni filters with the JL pipes and some gearing work.
I don't remember the reeds he has...I think either TDR or the YZ125's?
In this first baseline run it ran like crap...

https://imageevent.com/supertune/timnrd250350?p=1&n=1&m=-1&c=3&l=0&w=4&s=0&z=3

Way too rich everywhere.
I next took off the outer pre filter and went one size leaner on the main jets...
Ran better but still to rich up top... ;D

https://photos.imageevent.com/supertune/timnrd250350/20191004_164116.mp4

So dropped the mains one more time and got this...

https://photos.imageevent.com/supertune/timnrd250350/20191004_165235.mp4

Bingo, did the trick! Picked up just over 7HP with some tuning...  :righteous:

Next we put the pre-filters back on and found out we lost 2 HP! :bang: So yes, we could of rejetted a little leaner
and may get 1 HP back? So no pre-filters it is!  :vroom:
