General Chatter / Tank options for a rd500 repli...
Last post by ZLR - October 26, 2025, 09:05:37 PM
Hello all, I'm finally starting my v4500 (90's era look) replica build but I'm stuck on what tank to use. In my opinion the stock tank looks unproportional (if used) and out of place on all builds I've seen. I was thinking of a tz250 tank but don't know if it needs to be widened or possibly a 916/996 tank. I know people use nc30 tanks but I'd rather not. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you all.

Spent most of the afternoon doing trailer maintenance and prep for the trip to the House of Haase next Saturday. Installed the gas tank and put a couple gallons in and I am glad I did. The petcock, new 18 months ago turned very easily which should have clued me in but didn't and of course it began leaking as soon as I turned it on. So I pulled the tank off and propped it up so I didn't have to drain all the gas. Took it apart and found a John Deere diesel o-ring in my farm stash. All back together and no leaks.

If you want them to look original, you will need to have them gold anodized.

Powder wouldn't look right, but it's not going to cause any heat issues.

Harley has powder coated their cylinders with standard powder for years.

The difference isn't significant.

I believe the RGV250 forum and all its content...years of info are now gone.

(not mine)
Same seller as the other recent Sherpa road race bike. I like this one better! Cooler tank and the fairing fitting/alignment is much better.

I got around to getting my motor all back together for the most part with some new billet heads and vforce reeds and hope this helps clear off my work bench so I can move on to other parts.

I also put retrofitted my existing electronics panel to fit a smaller fuse block, a programmable hpi, and relocate where my ignition relay was to the back of the board as previously I had one that was way too overkill fitted up under the tank. I also previously had my ignition coil on this board but wanted to move it so I have more room to organize my wire harness.

I previously had the programmable HPI on my bike for a little bit but could not get the curve dialed in like how the standard curve was and I always had trouble starting so I switched back. Does anyone have a base curve or some pointers to help me out with that? I also did have issues with it running backwards after following the instructions for it, could this be fixed by setting max advance with the rotor like how standard does it?
