Is there *always* a spring inside the choke plunger assembly?  I seem to be missing it on reassembly, and don't recall if it was or wasn't there when I took them apart.  The lever works properly, lifting/holding/lowering the plunger.  The exploded view shows a spring, but there are so many VM variants....

yes, and it needs to be there.

Well I bought an Ebay VM plunger kit.  Plunger itself is the wrong length so I combined my old brass with new bits from the kit.

Given it's nice 'snap' now I suspect the spring has been missing for some time.

50's this week so I hope to get carbs back on and run the R5 for the first time since November...

Mine doesn't have a spring on my stock rd carbs. :( Never knew that one lol.

def should

I cranked the outer spring up to put pressure on the plunger. I bet my choke circuit was leaking. Remember how you said the plugs looked really carboned up when I killed the bike?

Maybe that was one of the issues.

Yep and it makes me wonder what effect I was getting from that missing spring....

can cause rich condition. that spring seals the rubber insert to the port. with no tension can/will leak.
