Turning Wrenches / Re: DS7 case vs. R5 ?
February 24, 2021, 09:59:33 AM
I'm going to replace all the bearings with new ones.. the gears all look good.. not a lot of wear and no chips, broken teeth. the forks have some shine wear on them but still plenty of life left.
I'm also going to have the yds7 crank rebuilt..

I didn't get a title for this bike as the it was abandoned and trashed..(left for dead).
So next week I'm sending off to Vermont the application and bill of sale. I hope to have it titled back in Oklahoma by summertime.  I could do a Title 42 here but it's such a pain in the butt! The Vermont way is much easier.. but more costly.

As my update my build thread indicates.. I am doing the 6 speed swap. Also the late RD350 7 disc clutch.
Will I need a different tach gear when putting the RD trans into my yds7 lower end.

Yes, you'll need the tach gear from a 350. Your tach will work either way but it will be even less accurate if you don't swap the tach gear. Also, I'm sure you figured this out but you'll also need the primary drive gear for the crank to go along with your 350 clutch.

Thank you. Yes I have the primary gear.
Attached is a pic of the RD350 trans set I purchased from another member of the board.. I think minus the tach drive this should be all I need for the swap.

daytona so all the lights are on when you turn the key on  the ac leads push 30w @3000 rpm and 45w at 4500 rpm and so on, the same on each leg, doesnt sound like much for a 150w elec system. john at economy cycle are having to deal with vape warrantee and its a real problem with their engineer

I am looking at upgrading my charging/ignition .. looking at the Vape system.
Comments like this make me wary of it... especially considering the price. Is this a common issue?

I ran the first AMA Superbike Production Series on a RD 350 (along with Scott Clough and a bunch of other guys).  We had to keep the bikes appearance stock but could upgrade suspension, remove lights, etc.  We could port the engines but had to retain the standard exhaust systems.  I ran Daytona and a almost all the other AMA road races east of the Mississippi in that configuration and it was a lot of fun.  My street bikes since that time have always included at least one, sometimes two RDs, and they always had stock exhaust
systems.  Some were ported, some not.  Almost every one had the cylinder heads reconfigured to change the squish clearance because the OEM heads are terrible.  Your engine would probably benefit from having the ports MATCHED to stock specs and cleaned up a bit but there is no need to have them modified.  It would just make riding around town a pain in the butt.  If nothing else have the heads turned to decrease squish clearance.  If you put a lot of miles on the bike an improved ignition system would be a benefit but we had to run the battery and coil when we raced them and while they took a lot of attention they worked well.

Thank you Lyn for your reply.
Very good experienced advice. I really don't want to turn a street motor into a unhappy racer. I have another project for that. I just saw all the other posts on the subject and wanted good advice.
I'll talk to some of the guys that are offering their services and try to get what's needs but not what doesn't.
Again.. thanks.

Yes..that was me. I took a chance on a unknown seller through a fb group. He also had the R5 jugs and heads I needed.  The top end parts will need work.. but they look good. May be worthy of throwing some $$ on. And yes that tank is excellent..so happy!

It's been a while since I posted on this thread. I didn't want it to die a web dusty death. Ya'll were kind enough to respond to it..so it's only fair I give it a update.
The R5: This bike is going to see a lot of use..
I decided to go with the 6 speed RD350 tranny upgrade. I also will be putting in a matching RD350  clutch set. I will be doing quite a bit of highway travel on the bike..and my home has more than a few hills. The extra gear will help on those long rides and the wider gear range will be a blessing for the ups and downs. If I lived in town the 5 speed would be more than adequate.. but that is not the case.
To keep this bike as simple as possible and keep it R5 real I just bought a R5 top end to sit on that YDS7 case. I have purchased a correct set of R5 carbs to complete the missing items list.
I also found a excellent R5 fuel tank.. it showed up today and I am impressed by the condition..just a few minor dings..and almost not rust inside.
I have so many projects in play..plus I am working two jobs until May..when I retire.
Then it's foot on the gas on my stuff. Till then.. it's baby steps.

Working up the parts for my R5. This is going to be a resto streeter that will ridden often.
It has YDS7 case/crank and will be fitted with a RD350 tranny and clutch. I'm putting R5 jugs on it..  with stock R5 carbs.
I'm not looking at chambers.. I want to keep the stock exhaust.
Will I really see any worthy benefit out of having the thing ported? I won't be racing the bike... but I do want good reliable performance.
I tried looking at multiple sites on the subject but it's like impossible to come on to real solid answers.
The bike will not be modded beyond what I said above. Stock brakes... ect.
Reason for the question is I saw the porting post offering the service and if it is worthy or not.. better to know now before I build up the motor.
Thanks

Excepting the obvious compression increase... what is the benefits of this modification?

Pretty new to 2strokeworld.. though I'm sure I once belonged to the old site.
I see a lot of the content is geared towards RD platform bikes.. which is awesome! But I love vintage 2 stroke off road bikes too!
My love affair mostly is around vintage Yamaha enduros. I have several in project stage ranging from 100cc to 360.
I'll hopefully have a couple finished this spring and make headway on the other soon.
Anyone else into these bikes?
