Turning Wrenches / Re: Basic carb question

UPP polyurethane manifolds.
https://uppracing.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=14_15.

Price all the parts. If carbs are set up for a fuel pump you need gravity inlet valves. Maybe 3 sets of main jets, pilots, needles, and emulsion tubes. Plus (custom?) cables, air filters, gasket sets. Then figure out the choke (which is probably a cable too). Plus whatever the carbs cost you. Adds up to the price of 1 flat slide TM32 carburetor. At least... ($175 at Summit). Then you're starting from scratch to tune them. I had the same idea with some snowmobile VM-34s until a friend told me the same thing. Check the price of everything you need before trying it and compare to brand new TMs. You'll still need the UPP manifolds with TM32 (40mm spigot) unless you get carbs with spigots you can turn down to `36 mm or use the VM/TM28-418 with 33 mm spigot ($132 at Summit). Stock VM28 spigot is 35 mm.
Stock rubber manifolds seem to be more resilient than the urethane. At least until the rubber hardens. Bad things happen if they crack.

I just did this last year. You are going to end up putting washers between the caliper and bracket if you use the center of the RD disc spider with a 10mm bracket. The bracket needs to be 13mm. In USA everyone uses 1/2" and it works fine. Metric equivalent to grade 8 is 10.9. It looks better if you get Allen head or the original hollow Yamaha caliper bolts. Home Depot has bolts that work. Torque everything to stock RD spec. "Ugga-duggas" not good enough.

General Chatter / Re: Heart skipped a beat, turkey strike
September 10, 2025, 04:10:05 PM
Here in Tennessee if you hit a deer with your vehicle you are legally entitled to take it home and eat it. Presumably it would be demised before you tuck in. Furthermore, if you witness a deer being struck and are not the striker, you may also partake in some venison. Providing that the person who hit it doesn't stop to claim it himself. Not sure about turkeys, groundhogs, rabbits or bears. Matter of taste perhaps?
Come to think of it. I'm not even certain that you are required to witness the event in order to feed roadkill to your family. Pretty sure you can stew up whatever you find beside the highway. Wild animals don't come with best-by dates so you're taking some risks...

It's not much fun being a small manufacturer right now unless there are domestic sources for your materials. U.S. corporations have outsourced too much so everything has gone up. Some parts from Asia are double last year's cost. I guess Europe is out as a substitute... I thought maybe there was an opportunity. Forget it. Low demand with high startup costs. Still cheaper to pay.
I used to get some expensive pieces from Russia but...

Turning Wrenches / Re: Oil venting from gearbox
August 01, 2025, 03:52:23 PM
I've got a bunch of dipsticks in my RD parts and they're all different lengths. They all screw into the side cover.
I have info saved from another thread. Poster was SoCal250. (thanks!)

RD250B: (in mm) Total length-111.2 High mark-107.1 Low mark-97.6

RD350: Total-110.7 High-107.6 Low-98.3

My RD350 dipstick was not long enough to touch the oil when filled by measure, shorter than this info by 1/2" and filling to the full mark caused oil to spray all over my rear tire. My chain was well-lubed though.

Turning Wrenches / Re: High RPM engine building

To go further on this. Is there a reason you shouldn't weld an OEM crank Vs buying a Vitos? If those are the only 2 choices and you really want to spin it. Since we already know that old stock cranks may come apart after so many repeated trips above 10k? Sure you may not be able to build it again. You can grind out a weld if it isn't just blasted solid. Or buy the aftermarket next time you need bearings.

It only takes a tack weld or do you need to really lay a deep bead on it?

Rising from the ashes like a phoenix!

Good job Ian. I like the paint scheme better than the original!

I dig the steel beer can for a coolant catch-can. Very vintage 70's.

A tip on posting eBay item links: The only piece of that string you need is the first line as it appears here. Everything after the question mark is unnecessary.

I'm wondering about Husqvarna too.

I ended up with a later TZ replica but made for an RD. It may be an Airtech. I've heard that RZ fenders will work.

There was a thread about this a while back, about a year ago?
