Is it proper to set the gap at tdc, or just anywhere they are max open?
Every day above ground is a good one.

I've done it wherever it was max open plenty of times and it worked...

Ok I'll do that. Curious, though. Why tdc and not anywhere else?

as the piston ascends towards tdc - at about 3mm btdc - the points start to open and the spark occurs. by the time the piston gets to tdc the points will be at their widest? think that's the reason  ;D unfortunately i haven't set any points for years now, i use my own electronic ignitioin kit, it's so much easier.
cheers, gil.

Points rd/rs/ds...I use 3/8 crank turn after firing.  (in the direction engine runs-counter clockwise)

ive always set them at middle of the dwell. note when the open, when they close, aim for the middle of that sweep. my go to has been .013"

All posts duly noted and considered! Every time I fiddle with timing bike runs better!  Currently at 1.8 btdc with gap set .35 mm middle of dwell. Tried setting gap at tdc but it wasn't working out when back at the timing of points breaking. Then, when I checked gap at max open, gap was out of spec. Too wide by .05 mm or more.
Peppy! Thanks everyone! :metal:
