January 1 Will begin porting and engine work on a limited basis. I am working on pricing for stage 1 and 2. It's unlikely I will do extreme builds for the public but am always willing to share what knowledge I have.

Reason for reopening - Friend that works for the city stopped by end of last week and told me there is talk of annexing my part of the county which will bring zoning, presently our county has no zoning, January 4th I will get a new business license and reinstall my signage on the building.

All new and returning customers are welcome.

Mark, thank you for the space,
John Ritter

I agree with the possibility of porosity and the softness due to low brinell readings. Years age L.A. Sleeve replacement sleeves were so soft even chamfering the ports could be done with a hand held scraper. What amazed me later was they advertised the brinell number on their website as if it was something good. Plating oems at last bore is much better than loosing the transfer duct volume with the thick replacement liners. With that said condemning the new parts isn't fair either until we have feedback to assess, if I needed a pair of cylinders, I would try them and hope to get a fair product and if sleeving was my other option I would buy the new ones, with sleeving you know you lose performance.

I never knew about them, never saw one but the cylinder pictures look as good as the oem. Updated piston style. If the liner hardness is high enough they might be worth the gamble ???????  Better than sleeving and losing all the transfer area (another guess on my part). I have 350 cylinders on my 250 bike and have already started converting a pair of 400's to replace them so I'll have to pass on being a test case. Hope who ever is has a good outcome.

Hey Mike, must confess I don't specifically recall but glad to see it is still getting used. John

I've ridden about 4800 miles since the beginning of last November and trailered maybe 1500 to 1800 miles getting to good areas. The largest portion of those miles were twisty roads. I try my damnedest to avoid anything straight as anyone who has ridden with me knows. Now for the shameful part, only about 800 miles were on my RD250 w/ported 350 top end (but last season I put about 2000 mi on it). The 4000 other miles were on my FZ1 and one look at any of my tires will prove my bikes get leaned over hard constantly and the FZ1 sees a lot of high speed 125/135 running. Just a side note, I'm now, as of 2 days ago, 76 years old, not bad for an ol' geezer. I forgot I also put maybe 150 to 200 miles on my sons RD400 which is Stage 4 ported, triple exhaust, extensive transfer work, dyno, modified Pro-Flo race pipes etc

Rarely but it can happen that a pressure test will pass but a vacuum test will fail. Pulling oil past the right crank seal will lean you out. Vacuum at 5 or 6 psi should let you know if that is the problem. I've heard of but never experienced a base gasket allowing pressure to hold and vacuum to fail. Just as a side note when installing base gaskets don't allow the inside edges to overlap.

Guys,  unfortunately I did not have anyone who is a straight up non-ported  DS7 or R5 rider contact me this round. Was worth a shot and maybe I will be able to offer again at a later date. Thanks to the guys that did contact me but I wanted to stay within the parameters I originally expressed. John Ritter

General Chatter / Piston Port Top End Porting

I am willing to help/teach/instruct for 3 days in June or July if someone is interested in coming to my shop to port their DS7 or R5 cylinders to Stage 1, hot street, and deck the heads for 92/93 octane. Only a few requirements which are you must commit to the 3 full days (8 to 5), must be able to stand for long periods and the cylinders and heads must be media blasted before your arrival. The cleanliness is mandatory or you just wasted a trip and deprived someone else of being here. I have all the porting tools and machinery required. I'm retired and have been doing this to give back a bit to the 2 stroke community. You will need to find a motel or campground for your lodging and be prepared to go for fast food lunches, I am not going to charge for the 3 days (use that savings to clean the parts). Bring your top end only, do not bring the bike, we are not building a running bike, only doing the porting and heads. I suggest you plan on having a fresh bore job after you get home, we will not be boring the cylinders here. Eye protection is mandatory and no alcohol or drugs during shop time. Yes, I've had both happen with different people that's why I mentioned it.

If you have another bike, 2 stroke or 4 stroke, and want to enjoy some of the back roads here then bring it along and we can take an evening ride. Lots of turns to play with in this area.

Message me through the board if interested. I should be able to answer most questions.

its closer than you might think. just fyi, look at the transfer port duct area 250 vs 350. You can squeeze a lot of power out of a 250.

I did a 250 years ago, it would run dead even with a stock 81 LC. It was ported to death but it was definitely NOT slow. A stock 250 is really good. I wouldn't count it out.

Mark, the BMEP potential of the 250 is far greater than the 350 making them a sweetheart to modify. The 2R8 top end has the outside dimensions of a 400 so cooling is better too.

Plasticman - Rob, I am about 70 miles north of you in Lawrenceburg, TN and know I have some of the snowmobile reeds and intakes for installing 38's, the reeds I install in something else but the manifolds are what I used a couple times in the past for RD's. You are welcome to come up and look at them and Banshee V-Force 3's as well. In fact I have my personal 400 cylinders off the engine so you can see the work needed to cut them in compared to your YZ85's which I feel are too small for 38's. Also you can see the carb dividers I use to assist bottom/mid range when going from low throttle to higher throttle, strongly recommended, and a friend of mine does a lot of divider work. If you like the manifolds you can have a pair (have to find them in storage bldg) because I'll never use them as my porting days are behind me except personal projects. Carl Anderson lives in Decatur, he is involved in AHRMA on the board and does a bit of porting if you need help with reed install. John Ritter

Rich and I have talked before and I am aware of some of his work on bikes for trail, on and off road track, Bonneville etc.. He is a capable porter and builder from what I understand. John Ritter
