Turning Wrenches / new points
April 08, 2025, 05:03:54 AM
guys,

a question that i should be able to get my head around, but cant.

if i replace a worn set of ign points with a new set, assuming the points gap is the same, does the ignition timing stay the same??

cheers

Lads,

Race day was superb, we were right at the braking point on the finish straight, 350kph right by us, insane.

yamaha did very well in testing on tuesday, Quarteraro second overall and saying that he was very pleased with the new chassis, as was rins. i am hoping for good things in 2025 for them.

who will take it to Marquez next year???

cheers

Excellent season, so it goes to the last round again.
we will drive up the coast and attend at Catalunya, all of the takings are going to the disaster fund so how bad. the weather forecast is good now so crossed fingers for them.

teazer,

i had thought along these lines with the exhaust, which is a home made attempt at a yz system.
i may well buy a yz exhaust of that era and modify to fit.

many thanks for your input

thats a good thought, i just wanted to eliminate all of the simple things before spending out on an inner rotor ignition set up as essentially i am happy with the standard cdi ignition, but not if its failing!

Turning Wrenches / mystery misfire

folks,

i have a new build finished and have an irregular misfire happening just as it gets to the power band, rev related, not throttle. the misfire is very irregular, like ignition cutting in and out.

the engine is a yz250 cylinder and head grafted onto a dt250 bottom end, all new rebore, crank, brand new carb, correctly set up and jetted, new carbon reeds, intake manifold. also new is the spark plug, cap, coil, cdi box (rex's), the flywheel rotor has been swapped out for one known to be good and the stator plate has been modded to get the correct ignition timing for the yz.  the exhaust has a new silencer and is as new all the way thru.

i just cannot think of anything else but it happens every single time it is ridden. any thoughts will be welcome and thouroughly checked out.

cheers

folks,

in ireland now we have e10 and i premix all of my two strokes, i never have a problem with them starting after sitting all winter (six months here). i also turn off the fuel and let it run down a bit, though not to empty carb as i fear some "cystalisation" might block a jet next time.

i was told that premix will keep an oily film on the surface of the fuel in the tank and stop moisture absorption into the e10, would be nice if it were true!
