Picked up a new basket case today. 1982 GSX750s Katana with a 1100 motor.
Been sitting for years, but looks like its about 95% there.

Its been over 30 years since Ive had one of these.

Turning Wrenches / Been a bit lazy this winter
March 16, 2021, 12:05:49 PM
I managed to get just about nothing actually done this winter, and then Saturday was sunny and almost warm and my bike was in pieces.
That was enough motivation to get stuff done.
new needle jets installed. Airfilter mounted. Its a tight fit and needed a bit of modification to get in there, but the pods squished between the frame rails really bugged me. Matching rear rim laced to a disk hub with a little Brembo caliper and R3 disk that weighs a fraction of the original unit.
Now I have to test it out, and if everything works I can finish mounts and stuff and clean things up a bit.

I had to move the rear sprocket over 1/2" to get the chain to align, and from what I have read, the cush drives don't really like that. I made the spacer fit tight to the flange on the hub just like the sprocket does, held in place by the circlip and the sprocket is bolted to the spacer. I may still have to replace the cush drives with solid aluminum in the future.

General Chatter / Cutting hardened steel swingarm bushing
December 29, 2020, 08:03:36 PM
I am fitting a new swingarm on my bike, and needed to narrow it a bit to fit my frame. Cutting the arm was no problem, but the hardned steel bushing that the needle bearings ride on was a different story. Google was not much help with a few suggestions to heat treat to soften the steel and then treat it again to harden it. Then I found a video of a Aussie guy cutting one  on a lathe with a dremmel.

Worked great, strapped the dremmel onto my lathe and just took it slow. Perfect straight cut.

If you are  planning on fitting a Motolanna arm, Im pretty sure that you need to cut SR500 bush to fit as well.

General Chatter / Rust converter in fuel tank
December 14, 2020, 01:35:41 AM
I was reading an article on a truck restoration and the guy used rust converter inside the fuel tank after knocking off the loose stuff with some nuts and bolts and shaking. After a bit of a search it seems like a few people have done this on car tanks.

Anybody ever hear of this?

General Chatter / RD350 Facia panel
December 13, 2020, 09:56:44 PM
Yambits has a replacement panel for the front of the RD350 instrument panel.
Is there any other options available to fix a one that has had the finish rubbed off by the keys?

General Chatter / Shop heater
December 11, 2020, 02:27:32 PM
What do you use for shop / garage heaters?
It does not really get too cold her in Vancouver, but Im from Africa, so anything below 20C or 68F is cold to me.

I need to warm the garage up a bit to increase my enthusiasm to get things done as everything is just sitting at the moment.
Looks like the forced air kerosene heaters would don a good job of heating up the space quite quickly when needed.

Turning Wrenches / New rear brake disk setupfor my 350
November 24, 2020, 11:43:47 PM
Finally started working on fitting the euro read spoked disk hub. Got the rim mounted and fabricated an adapter to fit a disk from a R3.
Now to figure out the caliper mount and stay and make some spacers for the rear axle.
Going to mount the caliper underneath so that the stay is out of the way of the rear shocks.

General Chatter / Mini lathe
November 12, 2020, 12:58:16 PM
I bought a mini lathe recently, and this little thing is super useful.
I already used it to make front and back pieces for the silencers I made, and Ive just turned some spacers for my front engine mount.
next job is to make an adapter to fit an R3 disk onto my spoked rear disk hub.
Well worth the $400 I payed for it.
